The Night of the Museums premieres activities at the Fuente del Oro and Palacio de Guevara next to a photographic exhibition on the recovery of temples damaged by earthquakes (15/05/2018)

The Mayor of Lorca, Fulgencio Gil, and the councilman of Culture in the Municipal Council, Agustín Llamas, have presented the wide range of activities that are going to be enjoyed next Saturday in our city for the celebration of the already traditional " Night of the Museums ".

The First Edil has stressed that this is an event that has a very broad popular support, and that every year enjoy thousands of Lorca and visitors.

This activity, which is carried out jointly in many Spanish cities, in our municipality supposes a very particular social and cultural incentive.

It is time for us to enjoy the ambitious recovery work that has taken place in our city after the earthquakes.

After years of effort and sacrifice we now have our monumental legacy in better conditions than ever, a result that is a stimulus to visit each and every one of the elements of Lorca's heritage.

Fulgencio Gil has indicated that this year, as the main novelty, 3 new actions of special relevance have been incorporated, such as the setting of the Fuente del Oro, the first phase of the restored furniture of the Palacio de Guevara and an exhibition of sacred art in the Church of Santiago.

In the first case, we are talking about the enhancement of one of the most emblematic places in the urban area that has been recovered thanks to an investment of 265,000 euros, included in the Master Plan for the Recovery of the Heritage.

We want to take advantage of this enclave, and for that purpose it has been planned to perform theatrical performances every hour between 8 pm and 1 am, under the title "The Source of Gold, stories and trasiegos", which is the responsibility of the Group of Choirs and Dances of Lorca, in collaboration with the War Theater Company.

As for the furniture, the interventions have been made in collaboration with the Department of Employment through separate furniture restoration workshops.

As a result of this collaboration, it has already been possible to recover a significant part of the most significant pieces of the collection that includes the 3 bargueños of the 17th and 18th centuries, the large chest of the Casa, the bedroom, the furniture of the Salón Amarillo in its most, as well as tables and chairs from other rooms.

Currently, they are working on the recovery of the Sala Pharmacy, and it is expected that in a short period of time it will occupy the room in which it was already located before the earthquakes.

Fulgencio Gil has indicated that also a specialist in Restoration, Bachelor of Fine Arts, has been working for almost a year in the recovery of the furniture of the collection and his paintings.

Thanks to this intense work has recovered a wide series of pieces that are part of the furniture, the original lamps of the Palace, so that they are almost all in their original places, as well as in some paintings that needed only light interventions.

We must point out that intervention has been carried out by a specialized Restoration Workshop of 3 large paintings from the collection made by Camacho Felices: Mystical ecstasy of Saint Teresa, The Daughters of Lot and the Immaculate of the main staircase.

With all this, I have already recovered for the visit the main staircase, the Hall formerly known as the Camachos, the master bedroom and a good part of the Yellow Room, which now, and in accordance with what was established in its day in the Criteria for the Exhibition of the Palace collection, it becomes part, together with the annexed room, of the Salón del Estrado, existing in the original composition of the Palace and which disappeared in the middle of the 19th century with the creation of the Salón Amarillo, and which now it is recovered to give the original meaning to the collection of Camacho Felices paintings.

The third novel element in this year's edition is the realization of a sacred art exhibition, which will host the church of Santiago, precisely one of the symbols of the strength with which Lorca have managed to raise our city after earthquakes of 2011, and that has meant an investment of 2.8 million to return to enjoy the temple, better than ever both from a security point of view and aesthetic and cultural.

We have managed to rebuild our monuments from the rubble left by the earthquakes, an effort that has earned the recognition of the whole world, and especially of the specialists in patrimonial recovery who have visited us over the last few years.

The sample that can be seen in Santiago is the result of the photographic workshop taught in the framework of the photography course of the Popular University, and includes temples that have been the subject of outstanding interventions for improvement after the earthquakes, as is the case of the Collegiate Church of Saint Patrick, and the churches of San Mateo, El Carmen, San Francisco, San Diego, Cristo Rey, San Cristóbal, San José, San Pedro, Santa María, San Pedro, San Lázaro, San Roque, Hermitage of Calvary, Patronal Sanctuary of the Virgen de las Huertas, convent of Las Clarisas and Chapel of the Rosary.
