The Mayor of Lorca, Fulgencio Gil, accompanied by representatives of the groups of elderly and nursing homes, participated this morning in the March for Active Aging, which commemorates the Fourth Exhibition of activities held for this cause in the Spain Square.
The point of departure has been the reading of a Manifesto in defense of the rights of the greater Lorca.
The idea behind the Manifesto is the commitment of the Department of the Mayor, and the City Council as a whole, with this sector of the population.
The Manifest for Active Aging is structured in 7 points that connect with the values ​​advocated by the World Health Organization and approved by the United Nations. Fúlgencio Gil has stressed the importance of "building a society in which all citizens have the same opportunities, since removing someone because of their age is an act of injustice and does not respond to the new model of society of the 21st century in which older people are an example of participation and commitment Our society must be able to understand that Aging is part of life, all people make up the society of which we are a part, there can be no biases that discriminate and establish hierarchies, be it for reasons of nationality, religion, sex, much less age. .
The Mayor of Lorca, also, added that "the equality that is proclaimed from our society must also reach the elderly, so that they have access to the same opportunities and services as the rest of the population, without age diminishes their opportunities. "
Gil stressed that "fortunately, active aging is now part of our reality and therefore we must be able to plan and establish the best strategies to prevent the causes of dependence and disease." We must also promote the development of autonomy of our elders, for this public services have to bet on the promotion of social participation and strategies that aim to revitalize this group.
The First Edil, finally, has highlighted the role of public administrations for this purpose.
"We have to promote policies aimed at promoting active aging, social participation, cognitive stimulation, healthy active life, the promotion of culture or the understanding of new technologies, as well as any activity that arouses interest among the elderly. The program will end on Friday May 18 with the closing of the exhibition of the works carried out by the different groups of older people.
