López Miras: "The new avenue Juan Carlos I de Lorca is more functional, better connected and more dedicated to the well-being of the citizen" (18/05/2018)

The president of the Community, Fernando Lopez Miras, said today, during the opening ceremony of the Juan Carlos I Avenue of Lorca, that this way "that vertebra the city is from today more functional, more commercial, better connected and more dedicated to the welfare of the citizen ", after the remodeling and integral renovation works that have been carried out.

"The new avenue Juan Carlos I is already a reality," said the president, who stressed that it is "the commercial and social reference of Lorca, the financial area and the heart of our Holy Week."

Its remodeling has also included various improvement actions in 11 adjacent streets and squares, with a total amount of 5 million euros.

The work done facilitates mobility, reducing to two lanes for vehicles and increasing the width of the sidewalks.

Architectural barriers have been eliminated, making it more accessible, and tree-lined and improved drinking water, sanitation, electricity, gas and telecommunications services have been recovered.

Likewise, LED technology has been installed to achieve energy savings of more than 50 percent.

He stressed the commitment of the regional government, the Government of Spain and the City Council in the reconstruction of the city, "to make Lorca not only recover the splendor lost after the earthquakes, but to shine even more and consolidate as one of the main engines of development and growth of the Region ".

In this regard, he recalled that this year will be an investment of 60 million "to equip it with the necessary infrastructure to face the future."

"Lorca looks to the future"

The president of the Community alluded to the earthquakes that occurred in May 2011, "that changed the city forever," and remarked that "we Lorca have managed to overcome and raise, from the rubble, a new Lorca, a city that looks to the future and that does not stop working ".

A future that, in his opinion, goes through the arrival of High Speed, since "the AVE is growth, wealth and employment, which will boost in Lorca an economic boom that will allow the creation of numerous jobs."

In this regard, he recalled that 730 million will be invested to connect Murcia with Almería in one hour and five minutes, "making Lorca the necessary gear, included in the Mediterranean Corridor, as an important, active, and alive part, for the population and the economy".

He also indicated that "we are still working on the reconstruction of the city," and pointed out that 232 families from the San Fernando neighborhood will soon be able to return to their homes.

In the next few days the Los Angeles-Apolonia neighborhood will be inaugurated, and in the next few months the remodeling of the Alameda de Cervantes, Santa Quiteria and its fairgrounds, the San Cristóbal neighborhood and the access road to the castle will be completed.

Other actions that will be launched will be the comprehensive renovation in the Cristo Rey-La Salud neighborhood, Santa Clara and on Europa Avenue, with a budget of more than 9.2 million euros.
