Diversification actions of the riverside vegetation of the Luchena River in the basin of the bridge reservoir, municipal area of Lorca (04/06/2018)

The Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries, Food and Environment (MAPAMA), through its Directorate General of Rural Development and Forest Policy (DGDRPF), has completed the investment of 262,793.70 € in the restoration works of the upper section of the River Luchena located between the swamps of Valdeinfierno and Puentes, in the Alto-Guadalentín region of the municipality of Lorca (Murcia).

It is a section of the watercourse included in the Natura 2000 Network, under the figure of ZEPA "Sierras del Gigante-Pericay, Lomas del Buitre-Río Luchena and Sierra de la Torrecilla" (ES0000262) and the LIC "Lomas del Buitre and Río Luchena "(ES6200034).

The objectives that have fulfilled the actions of environmental restoration of reference have been the following:

Promote the protection of biodiversity and nature over spaces included in the Natura 2000 Network.

Increase the mitigating role of climate change in riparian forest systems.

Guarantee the multifunctional role of a space of special singularity such as that of the Luchena River, optimizing the services and ecosystem benefits it provides to society (regulation of hydrological flow, erosion control, protection of biodiversity, mitigation of climate change, availability of places of recreation, leisure and free time, etc.)

Achieve a better longitudinal connectivity of the river, contributing to a better flow of nutrients, sediments and plant species through the river corridor.

The actions carried out have consisted of enrichment plantations with tree and shrub species on the banks of the river, whose design has been based on a preliminary analysis of the sections based on the information provided by a drone.

In this way, an action length of 10 km was established, where three differentiated planting models were identified based on distance to the riverbed and altitudinal differences.

The works executed in the restoration can be summarized in a previous preparation of the land, the load, transport, distribution of the plant and plantation, and the complementary works of installation of protectors or irrigations.

Through this action, the fluvial ecosystem has been enriched by using autochthonous species from the riparian edaphophyll series of the area, which in turn provide the greatest protection to the soil and have a high survival rate, among which can be mentioned the white poplar (Populus alba), hackberry (Celtis australis), ash (Fraxinus angustifolia), elm (Ulmus minor), willow (Salix spp.) or elderberry (Sambucus nigra), among others.

These works are framed together with other similar hydrological-forest restoration, fight against climate change and protection of natural resources water and land that is being made by the MAPAMA (DGDRPF), on land of the Guadalquivir, Tajo, Ebro and Hydrographic Confederations Safe, with an investment executed in 2017 of € 1,926,120.
