The PSOE demands that Rafael Méndez stops being the only hospital in the Region where there is no bariatric surgery to treat morbid obesity (04/06/2018)

The deputy spokesman of the PSOE in Lorca, Marisol Sánchez Jódar has denounced that the area III health and, specifically, in the Rafael Méndez hospital, is the only area of the entire Region in which, due to the lack of health resources, Surgical treatment of morbid obesity is offered through bariatric surgery.

The rest of the hospitals, including Caravaca, Cieza and Yecla, do offer it.

According to Sánchez Jódar, internal sources of the hospital say that since the beginning of the year there was a commitment that the Rafael Méndez hospital was going to assume this type of surgery, since it exists in the Lorca hospital staff with the appropriate training.

However, in order to offer this benefit, we need some minimal resources "that we do not have".

Specifically, two surgeons on duty instead of one, or there is a doctor to make emergency endoscopies, which, he insists "does not happen at present," so "it is impossible to get going."

When I arrived in 2010, they were sent to concert centers where they operated without waiting.

When the money ran out, there was a time that was not derived anywhere.

Subsequently we have been presenting cases in the Arrixaca, at a rate of 5-6 patients every 1-2 months (once assessed they may take 4-5 years to operate)

Currently, there are between 20 and 30 patients in area III with the protocol done, who are "in limbo" because, due to this lack of resources "there is no established to which hospital to refer them".

In 2010, the patients of area III with this disease were referred to concerted centers "where they operated without waiting".

When the money was over, these patients stopped being able to undergo surgery, to later be referred to the Arrixaca.

However, Sánchez Jódar points out "from Admission of the Arrixaca they refuse to operate there", forcing these patients to be evaluated in Lorca "when today we can not operate here"

The mayor has warned that most of these patients "also suffer from serious diseases," so the delay in surgery "is likely to make them worse, or even endanger their lives."

He pointed out that one of those patients, directly, had to ask for a loan to operate in the private one.

One of the most "alarming" cases is that of a patient "with the tests done for 5 years, valued several times in the Arrixaca and with perspectives of imminent surgery" that can not be operated in Lorca.

In summary, this is another example of the "serious discrimination" of users of area III compared to the rest of Murcia.

Although in bariatric surgery "there is no waiting list stop", there are "clamorous" differences between areas, from 6 months waiting at the Reina Sofía, several years at Arrixaca and "eternity" at Lorca.

In this sense, Sánchez Jódar has asked the current Mayor of Lorca to also pass "from meek to brave" to know how to demand López Miras, as he has done with Pedro Sánchez "in just 24 hours", the end of discrimination that maintains the citizens of area III in matters of health.

Sánchez Jódar has announced that they will raise this complaint to the Regional Assembly and, if necessary, to the Ombudsman to claim the necessary, personal and technical resources, so that Lorca ceases to be the only area in which it can not be operated. bariatric surgery to treat morbid obesity.
