The Mayor demands immediate solutions so that the farmers of the 2,000 hectares affected by the breakdown of the desalination plant can save their productions (29/06/2018)

The Mayor of Lorca, Fulgencio Gil, has expressed his "utmost concern" for the great uncertainty that exists among Lorca farmers for the very serious effects that the rupture recorded in the desalination plant of Águilas is already having on our agricultural sector.

At the moment there are more than 2,000 hectares in Lorca which are without a drop of water in the process of production, putting at risk existing crops.

It is about some damages of disastrous consequences that affect especially at this time of the year the production of watermelon

Fulgencio Gil, who has held a working meeting this morning with representatives of the affected group at the headquarters of the Community of Irrigators of Lorca, along with the Minister of Agriculture, Miguel Angel del Amor, stressed that "I do not like bad news that we are getting on the problems in the desalination of Águilas, but after listening to the irrigators I am even more worried if possible, I have spoken with them and, if we do not find a quick and effective solution, we would be talking about a real catastrophe thousands of families from Lorca and the whole region, from the city we demand the maximum speed from the public administrations so that all the procedures that depend on the different public organisms are unblocked with extraordinary urgency.

The First Edil has indicated that all the elements suggest that the breakdown in the desalination plant will leave these facilities without production for quite some time, so we have to work together to make this interval as short as possible.

Every effort must be made to ensure that irrigators have the water they deserve.

Our crops and our irrigators can not wait, just as the fruit does not allow waiting.

The solutions have to be immediate by the State, CARM and the CHS.

If it is possible to proceed to irrigation taking advantage of other infrastructures and other flows, they have to make it possible already, since we are facing a situation of real emergency and alarm.

Fulgencio Gil stressed that the break in the desalination plant shows that Spain urgently needs a National Water Pact (NAP), which brings water from where it is needed to where it is needed, since not even adding all the resources available in our basin respond to the social demand.

This PNA has to offer us the certainty that our farmers need to carry out their harvests, because with every liter of water that we lose, unemployment is generated, the economy falls and the market share that our farmers, with a lot of effort, has achieved Conquer internationally.

The reality is that time runs against us.

The Mayor recalled that, along with the NAP, it is necessary to proceed to comply with the commitments made with our municipality in water matters, such as, for example, the construction of a 500,000 m3 regulation reservoir that was designed precisely to serve this type of incidents.
