The Autonomous Community will invest 2,924,000 euros in the urban renewal of Avenida de Europa and adjacent urban spaces, which include a fortnight of streets.
It will act on a total area of ​​110,000 square meters, which will replenish the infrastructure and services with innovative energy efficiency criteria and minimum maintenance cost.
This action is part of the comprehensive renovation of neighborhoods damaged by the earthquakes of 2011, to which the regional executive allocated 22 of the 60 million euros that will be invested in the reconstruction of Lorca this year.
The general secretary of the Ministry of Development and Infrastructure, Yolanda Muñoz, accompanied by the mayor of Lorca, Fulgencio Gil, presented the work that also includes measures to boost the social activity of the neighborhood, as well as the renovation of equipment and improved connection with the rest of the city.
"We are going to repair and provide better infrastructures to the surroundings of Avenida de Europa with the aim of promoting accessibility and encouraging the creation of urban spaces for pedestrians," said Yolanda Muñoz, who indicated that "they will be applied in this new it works the actions that have been successful in other neighborhoods, and that will allow generating a greater number of streets of pedestrian-vehicle coexistence between the Avenue of Europe and the University Campus, without differentiation of heights between road and sidewalk ".
"We want to encourage cyclist traffic as a deterrent to motorized traffic," explained the general secretary, who highlighted the impact of reducing CO2 emissions in the city thanks to the construction of new sections of bike lanes, such as the continuation of Avenida de Europa with the neighborhood of San Diego, to the roundabout of the Armed Forces.
