The PSOE requires the PP to be responsible and develop a plan to reduce the high levels of ozone pollution suffered by Lorca (05/10/2018)

The Socialists believe that there is no strategy defined by the PP government team to fight against the high rates of this secondary pollutant in the city and blame this problem is worse in Lorca for the lack of urban transport fast, functional and attractive that is used by the population, and the latest measures taken to regulate traffic inside the city.

The councilor of the Municipal Socialist Group in the City of Lorca, David Romera, has demanded that the PP government team "be responsible and take effective measures that are necessary to try to reduce the high rates of ozone pollution that our city suffers , whose levels have reached values that are truly detrimental to the health of the population, "after the results of the report on air quality in Spain in 2017 prepared by Ecologists in Action, which the press has echoed regional, and that shows that Lorca is one of the Spanish cities most polluted by tropospheric ozone.

The data show that the last quarter (2015-2017) offers more negative indicators than the previous quarter, so the situation has worsened.

That is to say, "the air that Lorcans breathe every day is very contaminated by ozone, which is a secondary pollutant, and which especially affects the health of the elderly, people suffering from respiratory problems and children", so "the The duty of the municipal administration must be to take strategic measures in a specific long-term plan that supposes a reduction of the high levels of ozone in the atmosphere ".

Romera reports that in the case of Lorca, vehicle traffic is the main cause of high levels of pollution by ozone, so "it is necessary to take effective measures and bet once and for all to encourage the use of urban public transport "

To reduce high levels of ozone, experts recommend encouraging the use of environmentally friendly or less polluting vehicles, use urban transport, save energy, reduce the use of solvents, use clean energy and regulate traffic in such a way that it is the most possible fluid to avoid traffic jams.

The socialist mayor recalls that according to the report of Ecologists in Action on Air Quality in Spain in 2017, Lorca is one of the cities that suffer most from ozone pollution, even surpassing in the Region of Murcia to the regional capital and the nucleus of Cartagena, for which claims to the City of Lorca a "specific plan for the fight against ozone pollution in Lorca", in the same way that requires that measures are implemented to combat emissions generated by road traffic and passing by three axes: finish the remaining sections of the Central Round to free the downtown from the traffic that goes from one end to the other of the urban area;

bet on the modernization of urban transport to be modern, efficient, fast and attractive to be used again by Lorca;

and a global road traffic management plan in Lorca to allow vehicles to run as smoothly as possible, avoid traffic jams and the continued arrests and resumption of vehicle traffic, times when emissions multiply.

In this sense, Romera criticizes that "Lorca is in this unfortunate situation before the inaction of the PP Government team" because the municipality "does not have a specific plan to combat the high levels of ozone we breathe Lorca every day , we have an inefficient third-world urban transport that is barely used by the population, or that the measures for the regulation of traffic taken by the PP Government team due to the regeneration works such as in Avenida Juan Carlos I or in Avenida de Cervantes are wrong and go against the fluidity that experts demand to avoid traffic jams and an increase in the emission of pollutants. "

In addition to "having converted the main avenues of Lorca into alleys, the regulation systems used generate a slower, less fluid and therefore more polluting traffic," the mayor concludes.
