IU-Lorca asks that the users of the health of Area III accede to the plan of prevention of colon cancer from the age of 50 (15/10/2018)

The councilor of this training, Gloria Martin, denounces discrimination by the Ministry of Health and regrets that the residents of Lorca and its area of influence only benefit from screening tests between 67 and 69, contrary to what happens in other municipalities of the Region

The councilor of Izquierda Unida-Verdes in Lorca, Gloria Martin, has demanded that the Ministry of Health of the Government of the Region of Murcia expand the plan for prevention of colon and rectal cancer to users of the public health system from 50 years old

Martín regretted that in area III of health, only citizens between 67 and 69 have access to this program.

However, in other municipalities of the Region, as in Murcia, all citizens benefit from it after 50 years.

"We think this comparative grievance is indecent because, as far as we know, Lorca and the rest of the residents of the area pay the same taxes as in Murcia or Cartagena," complained Martín.

The mayor explained that with its discriminatory measures, the Ministry of Health prevents a part of the population access to screening tests - a fecal occult blood test and a subsequent colonoscopy when the test is positive - that serve to detect early cancer of the colon and rectum.

In this regard, the mayor explained that colorectal cancer is the most frequently diagnosed among the Spanish population (15% of the total, 34,331 cases in 2017, 500 in the Region of Murcia) and causes 15,923 deaths each year when it is not detected in time .

However, survival rates exceed 90% in the most initial stage of the tumor.

In the absence of symptoms, it is usually detected when it is in advanced stages or when there is already metastasis.

Hence, early diagnosis is essential because, otherwise, "cut lives," said Martin.

The mayor of IU-Green reproached the regional executive who denounces discrimination with respect to other autonomous communities, "when in their own territory is unable to promote equal health conditions for each and every one of Murcia."

"You can not favor having first and second class citizens, especially when what is at stake is the health and life of people," he concluded.
