City Council and Asofem claim inclusive education as a reference factor to prevent the emergence of mental health problems in the youth collective (18/10/2018)

"Inclusive education, positive mental health" is the motto that commemorates World Mental Health Day 2018, underlining the need for an education that supports values and works for diversity and inclusion for better mental health.

The councilor of Social Welfare in the City of Lorca, Fátima Mínguez, along with the president of ASOFEM, José Antonio Ponce, has participated this morning in the events promoted by the Mental Health Association Lorca, Asofem, which have been developed in commemoration of the World Mental Health Day.

It is about celebrating this day that takes place in more than 100 countries for more than 25 years, with the following activities:

Thursday, October 18: Placement of 3 petitions / informative tables in different points of Lorca (Corredera, Columns and Puerta del Mercado Semanal), in order to sensitize the population Lorquina about Mental Health.

Friday, October 26: Theater play "Rock Giner" of the Ros Giner Institute of Lorca, for the benefit of ASOFEM and AFEMAC, at the Auditorium Infanta Elena de Águilas at 8:30 p.m.

Friday, November 16: Benefit Dinner at Hotel Jardines de Lorca at 9pm, with the performance of the monologist Roper.

The Councilor of Oenegés, in this regard, added that the purpose of this information table and charity dinner is to sensitize society on the idea that mental health affects all people equally and, without losing sight of the diversity that characterizes us, there are many more similarities between people, than differences: all people want to develop a life project, have goals, sadness, joys and all aspire to contribute something to society.

This year, the movement grouped in MENTAL HEALTH SPAIN, which brings together more than 300 associations of people with mental health problems and their families and environment, has chosen, through popular vote, the slogan 'Inclusive education, positive mental health' starting from the theme proposed by the World Federation for Mental Health (WFMH) to commemorate the World Mental Health Day 2018, referred to the mental health of young people.

For ASOFEM, the objective of this campaign is to sensitize the public administration, organizations, educational centers and professionals to work on diversity and inclusion as a starting point for the education of children and young people and to take into account the challenges of a society that It changes at a speed of vertigo.

The MENTAL HEALTH SPAIN Confederation, of which ASOFEM is a part, has repeatedly denounced the urgent need for the mental health of young people to be on the political agenda, with the aim of reversing the data provided by the World Health Organization (WHO). ), who affirms that in the coming years mental disorders will be the main cause of disability in the world.

Child and adolescent mental health is one of the main pending subjects of Spanish health care that urgently needs to be improved.

According to WHO, the prevalence of mental health problems in children and adolescents is estimated between 10% and 20%.

In addition, half of the mental disorders appear for the first time before the age of 14 and 75% begin before the age of 18.

If you look at Spain, the Juvenile Life and Health Barometer of the Help Against Drug Addiction Foundation (FAD) warns that 2 million young people aged 15 to 29 (30%) have suffered symptoms of mental disorder in the last year .

In this sense, ASOFEM claims the existence of a child-juvenile unit in Psychiatry at the Rafael Méndez Hospital so that minors can be adequately cared for without being far from their immediate surroundings and family members.

ASOFEM develops a Children and Youth Program "Puzzle Program" that attends to those children who are diagnosed with mental illness, who belong to a group at risk of suffering them (from dysfunctional families and victims of traumatic events) and of parents with problems of mental health.

Despite having an agreement with the Ministry of Education through our Regional Federation, this agreement is collaborative, that is, it allows us to offer information and advice to the educational centers of Lorca that request it, but it is not economical, so that this program has the limitation of not having financing to develop it adequately.

From ASOFEM, and following the theme of this year "Inclusive education, positive mental health", it is claimed that professionals in the educational and health field must have sufficient training to detect any mental health problem in the classroom and dominate the language of inclusion .

Mental Health figures

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), in the world 1 in 4 people have a mental disorder throughout their lives.

ASOFEM Mental Health Lorca is an Association of Family and People with mental health problems of Lorca and Region (Murcia) constituted as such in 1997 and has a Day Center of the Autonomous Community. We are a Self-Help Association created for the defense of the rights of people with mental illness and their families, this being a channel for the participation of these families, in order to improve the living conditions of the affected person and their family.
