EU Thematic Center on Drought and Desertification (19/10/2018)

The councilor of this formation, Gloria Martin, announced that her party will request the creation of this institution in the next plenary session since the City of the Sun is the municipality with more square kilometers of Europe with greater risk of desertification and desertification

The councilor of United Left-Greens, Gloria Martin, will raise to the ordinary Plenary session of next October 29 a motion in which she will ask the City Council of Lorca to urge the Ministry of Energy Transition to recover the project of creation of a Thematic Center of the EU against the Drought and Desertification and to propose as headquarters of this institution to the City of the Sun.

The motion defended by Martín is endorsed by two national environmental prizes, Pedro Costa Morata and Domingo Jiménez Beltrán -who was also Executive Director of the European Environment Agency-, by Miguel Ángel Esteve, director of the Department of Ecology and Hydrology of the University of Murcia, by Mr. Andrés Giménez Calsalduero, professor of Ecology at the Miguel Hernández University, by Teresa Vicente Giménez, professor of Philosophy of Law and expert in Environmental Justice and Socioecological Rights, by Francisco López Bermúdez, Professor in Geography Physics and Morphology, aridity and desertification expert, as well as associations related to the conservation and defense of the Environment, such as the nature of the Club Senderista La Carrasca, Ecologists in Action-Region of Murcia, Naturactúa, Lorca Biciudad or the Federation Espartaria 'Tierras Altas' of Lorca.

Martín explained that accessions are open to the entire society of Lorca and that those who wish may join it until the day of the Plenary.

The mayor of IU-Greens said that Spain is the European country with the highest risk of desertification and is fully immersed (like the rest of the Mediterranean basin and Africa), in a destructive process that threatens 75% of its territory.

6% of this has already been irreversibly degraded, especially in the southeastern half.

According to a study carried out in 2017 by experts from the University of Murcia (UMU), in the last two years, the drought has damaged 31,700 hectares and 11 million trees in the Region of Murcia.

72% of the pine forests in the Region are threatened as a result of the effects of climate change.

In the next fifty years, some forest masses will disappear and others will enjoy poor health.

Regarding Lorca, in the last four years, four million trees and shrubs that have been severely affected or have died in the whole region by pests mainly produced by the continued drought.

Lorca is also a municipality with major development problems due to its historical water deficit.

That is why, "we need meticulous scientific studies that address from a social, legal and environmental perspective the rational use of this little good," said Martin.

The councilor of IU-Greens recalled that in 2007 the Spanish Government announced that our country would propose to the European Union the creation of a Thematic Center against Drought and Desertification, a project that, finally, did not materialize.

"We consider it necessary to recover and bet, without complexes, for the candidacy of our municipality as the ideal location of this center," he said.

Martín explained that, "we are facing an important challenge in which the phantom of erosion and the threat of the desert advance are conjured" and that, nevertheless, "we are convinced that it is possible to address the necessary adjustments in our systems of production to preserve our soil from self-sufficiency in relation to water consumption ".

In this regard, he recalled that the drought, a complex danger with large socio-economic and environmental repercussions and widespread, "causes more deaths and displaces more people than any other natural disaster, especially in the African continent."

Therefore, it is necessary that "from Europe, synergies are established with other peoples of the world to move from theory and predictions to action".

In this regard, the mayor of IU-V noted the "contradiction" in the EU, which leads the fight against climate change globally, but, however, barely deals with the phenomenon of desertification.

Therefore, it is committed to the creation of this institution and its location in Lorca, the municipality with the most square kilometers in Europe (1,675 km²) with the highest risk of desertification and desertification.
