It is a path that takes advantage of the old layout of the railway network between both municipalities and that constitutes a stimulus for development for the residents of the district.
The Mayor of Lorca, Fulgencio Gil, together with the Minister of Culture and Tourism of the Regional Government, Miriam Guardiola, and the Mayor of Huércal-Overa, Domingo Fernández, officially inaugurated this morning the new Greenway that links the Region from Murcia to Andalusia, specifically through the municipalities of Lorca and Huércal Overa, following the old railway line.
Fulgencio Gil has affirmed that the day of today supposes a very important milestone for two municipalities that are brothers, with the great symbolic load that this entails for thousands of citizens.
It constitutes the recovery with very useful character of a road that previously communicated to us for being the route through which the train passed until it suffered the biggest error in the history of Spain in the matter of railway communications, as it was the closing of the line that communicated Lorca with Almeria and Granada.
Today we strengthen the affective ties between our regions, rescuing this route as Greenway between Lorca and Huércal Overa, and are precisely our neighbors of the hamlet of Almendricos who premiere a tourist attraction that is a revulsive for everyone, thanks to the bet he has made the President of the Region, Fernando López Miras, through the Ministry of Culture and Tourism, whose head, Miriam Guardiola, I want to thank her particular sensitivity both with this project and the many that we have underway in our municipality.
The Mayor has anticipated that the residents of Almendricos are double congratulations, since just a few days ago we received good news from the Ministry of Development, with the bidding for the repair and comprehensive improvement of the access road that will entail a approximate investment of 5.5 million euros.
We are also available to inform the neighbors that we are processing before the Government of Spain the cession of disused buildings that were part of the Almendricos station, and that have been in disuse for a long time.
We want them to undertake a recovery initiative, so that they are really useful for the neighbors and constitute a positive impulse.
My commitment is that, at the same time we obtain their assignment, we agree with them what kind of service the neighbors consider that may be most useful for the parish, and we will do so.
This new Greenway has a route of 6.6 kilometers in its regional section and takes advantage of the old railway line that linked Lorca with Baza.
With this new section, the Region has more than 150 kilometers of Greenways
The Region of Murcia has a new section of Vía Verde that runs along the old railway line that linked Lorca with the Andalusian city of Baza, and has a total route of 19 kilometers from the hamlet of Almendricos Lorca to the Almerian town of Huércal- Overa, of which 6.6 run through regional territory.
The Minister of Tourism and Culture, Miriam Guardiola, said that "this new ecotourism tour reinforces the recreational and sports offer in the southern area of ​​the Region, by promoting the practice of healthy activities and respectful of the environment such as walking, running or riding cycling".
He added, "the new route will also help to reinforce the flow of pilgrims to Caravaca de la Cruz, coming from the Almanzora Valley."
In this way, the Community confirms its commitment to interior, nature and active tourism, as a resource to reduce the seasonality of tourism and to contribute to the creation of employment and the economic reactivation of the areas where it is developed.
In the last year, the Ministry has prepared the sign, installed signaling and beaconing, as well as security elements and reforested the section located in regional territory, all co-financed with Feder funds.
In addition, soon a new brochure will be published in Spanish and English, as well as a promotional video of the new layout of the Vía Verde that will be disseminated through the websites www.murciaturistica.es and www.viasverdesregiondemurcia.es.
This action strengthens the cooperation with the Consortium of the Greenways of the Region, a collaboration that has allowed in recent years to the Greenway of the Northwest are added those of the Campo de Cartagena, Mazarrón and Almendricos, totaling more than 150 kilometers
Currently, works are being carried out to reinforce safety in the Campo de Cartagena Greenway (pedestrian walkway to avoid crossing with the RME11 highway) and in the Mazarron Greenway (separate lane of the RM-D4 highway), as well as as to enable a connection between the greenways of Totana and Caravaca de la Cruz, which will be ready at the beginning of 2019.
On the other hand, the Minister of Tourism has asked the State to eliminate the fee that municipalities must pay annually to Adif for the sections in which the greenways run through the old railway.
In addition, work is underway on a new ordinance so that users can better enjoy the experience of using greenways to practice sports, walk or contemplate nature.
The future standard includes a series of measures aimed at preserving these infrastructures and preventing their deterioration, as well as to preserve the safety of users.
