With the aim of recovering the original state of this monument, the beneficiaries of this workshop launched by the Local Development Council will proceed to recompose and restore the detached elements;
to consolidate and restore the column, pedestal and bleachers conserved in their original place;
to the execution and installation of a cross carved in stone as the original and the replacement of the elements detached in place
The Councilor for Local Development of the City of Lorca, Sandra Martinez, reported this morning that the Lorca Consistory will begin the restoration work of the Humilladero Cross of the Plaza del Rey Sabio, located in the vicinity of the Employer's Sanctuary.
Those responsible for carrying out this action are the students of the course "Conservation of Cultural Heritage" developed by the Department of Local Development.
Sandra Martínez pointed out that "given the material characteristics of the monument, built in sandstone from the old quarry of Murviedro, material that with time presents serious problems of sandification, disintegration and structural weakening, together with the tensions suffered after the earthquake of 2011 , last September, the shaft of the column fractured, precipitating the fall of part of it, the capital and the cross.These elements were severely damaged, reason why they were collected carefully and deposited in the Conservation Workshop of the Cultural Heritage for its restoration ".
The Local Development Councilor has detailed that "with the aim of recovering the original state of this monument the 7 students of the course of" Conservation of Cultural Heritage "will perform the following actions: recomposition and restoration of the elements detached, consolidation and restoration of the column, pedestal and bleachers conserved in their original place, execution and installation of a cross carved in stone as the original type pometado and replacement with criteria of restoration of the elements detached in place ".
It is worth mentioning that it is a pomegranate-free cross that rests on a Tuscan capital, with a shaft with a grooved column in the upper two thirds, a base, a pedestal of inverse entasis and steps formed by three steps.
It was erected in 1714 to consecrate the atrium of the Convent of the Virgen de las Huertas due to the Fair that was held there until the mid-nineteenth century, which due to the poor state of the facilities, moved to the city.
This cross came to delimit the atrium, and pointed out that it was a sacred space that should not be occupied with the stalls of the carnies.
Martínez, finally, explained that "the objective of this course developed by the City Council, which is going to proceed to the restoration of the Humilladero Cross of the Sanctuary of the Virgen de las Huertas, is the improvement of the professional qualification of the students to facilitate their labor insertion, as well as to continue the collaboration through the practices in the auxiliary works of restoration of the patrimony of the city, in this sense, the 7 participating students receive a scholarship of 800 euros per month ".
