The municipal workshop for the conservation of historical heritage begins the repair of the stature of the Blessed Virgin of Mercy, of Paso Morado (28/11/2018)

It is an image that is part of the procession of this Brotherhood, and that presented multiple deteriorations, many of them derived from the earthquakes of the year 2011 and the precipitations in the course of its procession.

The restoration is directed by the author's son of carving.

The Local Development Councilor in the City of Lorca, Sandra Martinez, reported that the Workshop of Conservation of Historical Heritage of this municipal area will begin the restoration of the size of the Blessed Virgin of Mercy, owned by the Brotherhood of the Most Holy Christ of the Forgiveness of Lorca, Paso Morado.

We are talking about a piece that is kept in the parish church of Ntra. Señora del Carmen and that was carved by the Murcian sculptor Antonio García Mengual in 1982 (Salzillo Prize).

It is a sculptural group of round shape and natural size, carved in coniferous wood on volume built with pieces assembled in ambo and polychromed with oils.

Regarding its iconography, the image represents the Virgin Mary sitting holding on his right knee the body of Jesus Christ after the descent of the Cross.

In relation to the previous actions, we must indicate that repaints and varnish subsequent to its original state are appreciated.

Martínez Navarro explained that the analysis carried out to date on its state of conservation states that currently the work is in a state of deficit conservation, with the following pathologies:

Large cracks are seen both at the base and in the bodies of the images, due to the movements of the structural pieces of wood, inadequate handling and abrupt changes in temperature and humidity.

At this point it is necessary to point out the forced and hurried transfer that had to be made with the sculpture after the 2011 earthquakes.

Repaints are appreciated and varnished after the original, very oxidized.

Chromatic alteration due to surface dirt.

Scratches and loss of color in the most exposed areas, such as hands and feet.

Crown of thorns very deteriorated.

Disappearance of a crystal tear.

Application of synthetic putty in holes of the base.

Incorporation for your shipments of metallic support badly crimped and dimensioned.

The Local Development Council has stated that the object of action proposed by the technicians considers the proposed intervention aims to ensure the integral conservation of the sculpture, through the established criteria of conservation and restoration.

Preserving at all times the original elements and intervening only in those aspects that produce deterioration and degradation of the whole.

In order to ensure its future conservation and recover its dignity and understanding.

With these premises, the following treatments are considered pertinent:

Sealing of fissures by injections of polyvinyl acetate.

Elimination of synthetic putties.

Reintegration of the original gear losses in lagoons and fissures, with traditional tails of organic tails similar to the original ones.

Physical-chemical cleaning to remove the layer of superficial dirt, the oxidized varnish and the punctual repaint, after a solubility test.

Differentiated chromatic reintegration.

Restoration of the crown of thorns.

Replacement of glass teardrop.

Final varnish of protection with varnish stable to oxidation and ultraviolet rays, in order to improve its conservation.

Execution of a new metallic support suitable for transport.

Sandra Martinez has indicated that this workshop is composed of a monitor and 8 students.

On behalf of the council has also decided to provide the Paso Morado with adequate support to facilitate the transport and / or displacement of this size on, a structure that will be made by the components of the locksmith workshop of the City Council .

This will prevent possible damage to the image of the Virgin in the future.
