The Mayor of Lorca, Fulgencio Gil, reported that the City Council, through the company Aguas de Lorca, will invest 4.5 million euros to improve the urban confluence of Lope Gisbert Street with the Plaza de San Vicente, within an ambitious plan that contemplates the improvement and change of the current accesses to the existing parking and the replacement of the building that housed the old police station, a space on which a new building with a basement for parking will be built. vehicles, ground floor, 4 intermediate floors and an attic floor on deck.
The Mayor explained that the new building that will replace the old police station will allow Lorca to save 90,000 euros per year only in terms of rent for the offices of Aguas de Lorca, since the City Council has decided to abolish the rent of the current venues .
The spaces on the first floor of the new building will be shared between a children's playroom and the public service of Aguas de Lorca, which will also take advantage of the 1st and 2nd floors, while the 3rd and 4th floors will house the new headquarters of the Popular University .
This new location will allow an expansion of both the space that has this service and the program of courses and activities offered to all Lorca.
It is a demand that has been raised for a long time and now we have the opportunity to offer a satisfactory solution.
The rooftop attic floor will be configured as a multipurpose space for the use of groups of all kinds, with the development of cultural activities, citizens, presentations of tourism, commercial and leisure initiatives.
The First Edil has anticipated that the facilities that the Popular University will vacate, located in the Plaza Virgen de la Amargura, and that are municipal property, will be destined to the creation of a Youth Space in the heart of the city, being available of the Council of Youth and Youth Associations for their use and enjoyment, and, given their size, they will also allow to open an open classroom for students that will be open according to their needs, including 24-hour service if necessary.
The operation brings with it the urban reorganization of this area of ​​the urban area to offer a definitive solution to two substantial problems of which the confluence of the Plaza de San Vicente with Lope Gisbert Street suffers, besides solving also the serious access problems that presents the public parking of San Vicente.
It is about recovering and making available to Lorca an urban infrastructure in a historical center that allows us to take advantage of an area of ​​obvious relevance to our city.
Among the most notable improvements that all citizens will be able to find is the suppression of the current access to the San Vicente car park, which causes so many problems for its users and, in many cases, has caused drivers to desist from using it.
The entrance and exit ramps will completely change the current configuration, so that it will be accessed through a new underground access directly from Lope Gisbert Street through an underground corridor that will be enabled during the construction of the new building that will replace the old police station.
Similarly, the exit will no longer be made to Lope Gisbert, eliminating the current ramp with steep slopes and difficult visibility, which, moreover, cuts off the passage of pedestrians on the sidewalk itself.
Thus, the current exit ramp is deleted and allows aligning the sidewalks of San Vicente and Lope Gisbert.
The vehicles will start from now on Calle Corredera.
The urban improvement for the pedestrian will be more than considerable and will benefit especially the Plaza itself, which will gain in security and comfort, also allowing to eliminate the current "bottleneck" that exists in the area, a narrowing that will disappear.
The Mayor has underlined that this project is the result of a deep and conscientious work that has been done by the municipal services under the premise of offering the best result for our city, and for this purpose it has been studied in a very precise way how could benefit the most from all points of view: economic savings, recovery of the historic center, revitalization of activity and social movement, urban improvement and resolution of access problems.
We are going to grant an extraordinary quality leap to the Plaza de San Vicente and its surroundings, with a project that constitutes the most effective and practical intervention of recent years in this area.
Fulgencio Gil has indicated that the meeting of the Board of Directors of Aguas de Lorca held this morning has included the presentation of this plan, a previous step to be able to move forward and start the administrative procedures necessary to make this plan a reality as soon as possible.
In fact, the next step will be to commission the relevant project to demolish the building, something that we hope to be able to carry out in approximately 2 months.
