IU Lorca asks for explanations about the rain collector of Saprelorca whose construction should have started in 2018 (18/01/2019)

The councilor of this formation, Gloria Martin, met yesterday with representatives of the polygon and the Platform of Affected by the Floods, Pailorca.

In this meeting, other solutions were addressed to avoid flooding in Torrecilla, such as the channeling of part of the water to the Béjar rambla or the construction of a storm tank

The councilor of Left-United Greens in the City council of Lorca, Gloria Martin, will ask in the Municipal Plenary of January on the state of the project of construction of a great collector of pluvial in the Industrial estate of Saprelorca, announced by the PP in October of 2017 and in which the regional government said it would invest eight million euros.

The measure was announced by the then Minister of Water, Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries, Francisco Jódar and by the Mayor of Lorca, Fulgencio Gil, who went on to say that the start of the works of the first phase would take place in 2018 and that was "finalizing the file" to make available to the Ministry the land necessary to build this infrastructure.

The mayor said that it is an "urgent" action because, in case of heavy rains, the polygon drains are overcome and much of the water goes to the public channel, flooding plots and homes in the hamlet of Torrecilla, as happened last November.

In addition, in the polygon there is no separate network of sewage and rainwater, so that neighbors have also reported numerous pollutant discharges.

Martin met yesterday with representatives of Saprelorca and the Platform of People Affected by Floods, Pailorca.

In this meeting, other solutions that could be "alternative or complementary" to solve the problems of floods were also addressed.

Among them, the channeling of part of the waters of the polygon that are now poured into the Rambla Alta towards the Béjar rambla, which has a greater channeling capacity, was pointed out.

In addition, it was suggested the construction of a "storm tank", a deposit that captures and retains rainwater when there is very intense rainfall, allowing then its controlled evacuation, which reduces the possibility of flooding.

This device is particularly important in the areas where there has been a massive waterproofing of the basins, for example due to urbanization, as in this case.

The councilor of IU advocated that the municipal government team meet with the affected platform and with Saprelorca technicians to study the best possible alternatives and put them into practice.

In this regard, he recalled that 6,500 residents live in danger zone due to floods and that, six years after the San Wenceslao flood, in which five people lost their lives, "they have only received promises."

"We know that the actions in the polygon are not the only necessary, but in these has direct powers the City Council, which is responsible for the network of sanitation and rainfall of Saprelorca, through Aguas de Lorca," Martin concluded.
