The Mayor asks the Minister of Culture that his department prioritize the declaration of Lorca embroidery in his Holy Week as a World Heritage Site (09/02/2019)

Fulgencio Gil, who has invited José Guirao to attend the Biblical-Pastoral parades this year, has also demanded that the central government finance the integral rehabilitation of the church of San Juan, thus completing the recovery of the high churches.

The Mayor of Lorca, Fulgencio Gil, has asked the Minister of Culture of the current Government of Spain, José Guirao, that the Ministry prioritize the declaration of the Lorca embroidery and its staging in our Holy Week Pastoral-Scriptures for the achievement of of this recognition by UNESCO.

We are all aware that the hands of Lorca embroidery are able to capture with silks and gold authentic works of art that amaze everyone.

What makes us different is precisely that Lorca has transcended the realization of handmade pieces to elevate them to the category of true art.

In fact we have the only textiles that have earned their recognition as Cultural Interest (BIC), thanks to the initiative of our Steps and the unconditional support of the Autonomous Community, but Lorca deserves much more.

Fulgencio Gil, who has taken advantage of the Minister's visit to our city in the morning, has stressed that the declaration as a World Heritage Site is something that this city is more than worthy.

We have arguments, facts and heritage and intangible heritage that certifies it.

Anyone who has had the opportunity to enjoy our Different Passion makes this clear.

To date, and thanks to the praiseworthy work of our brotherhoods and brotherhoods, we have gone a great part of the way, even to achieve that Lorca has seen his candidacy approved, despite the heavy and complex procedure that this kind of initiatives entail.

That is why now we need the support of the Ministry of Culture, and, taking advantage of the fact that we now have a Minister who knows the importance of our embroidery, it is when we need this support the most.

We are also aware that other Spanish cultural and social events fight for this distinction, however all Lorca agree that our time has come.

The First Edil, who has invited the Minister to contemplate the upcoming biblical-passional Holy Week parades on the date that his agenda allows, has indicated that what is done here and can be enjoyed is not found anywhere else in the world ;

we are facing a singular art, a way of understanding life in the Lorca style, with an overflowing passion and an artistic waste that should have this recognition as soon as possible.

Fulgencio Gil has asked the Minister that the central administration be involved in the recovery of the church of San Juan, the last remaining to rehabilitate those located on the hillside of the castle, and that it was part of the old city, being within the walls that constituted the defense of medieval Lorca.

The Mayor has told the Minister that Lorca has already done his homework and drafted the technical and intervention project.

We speak of an emblematic temple, destroyed in the civil war.

Its recovery would complete the actions that the City Council has developed for the restoration of the High Church and will contribute to the improvement of the quality of its urban environment.

Fulgencio Gil has anticipated that the forecast with which the Consistory works is that this building, once completed the restoration, is part of the tour of Lorca Taller del Tiempo as has already been done with other interventions such as the case of the San Antonio Porch, sections of Muralla del Castillo, Torre Rojano and Torre IX, which today are already enhancing the range of socio-cultural and tourist activities in the city.

The Church of San Juan was built in the fifteenth century but had to be rebuilt later in the seventeenth century.

It has a plant in the form of a Latin cross, a vault in the central nave, a dome and a bell tower.

Built with masonry and brick walls, the structure of the roof was mostly lost.

The zunchado and shoring was the basic axis from which the works of action started, applying on the walls and cornices, the bell tower, and part of the dome.

They also replaced part of the arches of the bell tower and were partitioned and filled most holes to give greater stability to the building.

The intervention that the City Council demands is the restoration and conservation of the existing elements, the covering and closing of all the spaces and the interior conditioning for its use related to socio-cultural activities.

In this sense, the existing elements of the new construction are clearly differentiated and overlap to protect those and to complete the lost volumes and spaces.

At the structural level, consolidation and reinforcement of factories and remains of vaults would be carried out.

A structure of laminated wood and phenolic board will be used to continue with the order of elements such as façade arches and vaults that have already disappeared, so that the structure itself forms spaces of the same geometry as the original ones.

Outside there will be a light zinc covering on the wood allowing a clear perception of the vaulted Latin cross plan that frames the centrality of the decorated dome.

This opens up the 8 possible holes in the drum of the dome, which reinforces the internal symmetry, evenly distributes the lighting and allows admiring the beautiful interior decorations once restored.

The current access to the church is dangerously close to the access road to the castle, with practically no previous stay space, so the entrance to the northern platform is moved, whose level will be reduced to the interior level, and a vestibule will be created of access regularizing the external volumes next to the chapels of this facade, so that it is accessed by the arch facing the one of the main door.

It is also used to glaze the large arch now bricked at the foot of the temple, which will introduce a light filtered in the interior.

Toilets will be built in the body of the old sacristy, as well as administrative spaces will be available on two levels.
