IU Lorca demands the expansion of MIR places to end the deficit of medical personnel in Area III of Health (11/02/2019)

Gloria Martín regretted that for the 2018/19 call only one training place was offered for a pediatrician, another for an intensivist and another for an internist for the Rafael Méndez University Hospital.

These data contrast with the 51 places of specialists of the Virgen de la Arrixaca, 14 of the Reina Sofía or 22 of Morales Messeguer, all in Murcia, or 17 of the Santa María del Rossell (Cartagena)

The councilor of United Green Left in the City council of Lorca, Gloria Martin, has asked the Delegate of the Government in the Region of Murcia, Diego Conesa, demands the increase of the number of squares of specialized sanitary training to palliate the lack of medical specialists that affects to the Region of Murcia and especially to Area III of Health.

A requirement that has also been transferred to the people in charge of the Murcian Health Service (SMS) so that they can assert the important needs of facultative personnel before the Ministry of Health.

Martín again expressed his concern at the lack of medical specialists "that contrasts with the few positions of Resident Medical Intern (MIR) that are offered annually."

A problem that will worsen in the coming years due to the high number of planned retirements.

In that sense, the mayor of IU explained that it is the Ministry of Health which, taking into account the requests of the autonomous communities, fixed the proposal of offering places for specialized health training, which for this year is 6,797 places in all the Spanish territory.

For the Region of Murcia, in the call 2018/2019, 221 accredited places have been offered in educational health centers destined to the training of graduates in Medicine, which Martín described as "insufficient".

Twelve of them will be for pediatrics, although only one of them will be destined for the Rafael Méndez de Lorca university hospital.

"The people in charge of the SMS complain that there are no pediatricians to cover the healthcare needs of the population, but we do not see them pressing in Madrid to increase the number of MIR places," lamented Martín.

The mayor of IU explained that, with respect to other specialties, Rafael Méndez will only add another two training places, one for intensive medicine and another for internal medicine.

This figure contrasts with the 51 of the Virgen de la Arrixaca, 14 of the Reina Sofía or 22 of Morales Messeguer, all in Murcia, or 17 of the Santa María del Rossell (Cartagena).

On the other hand, of the 82 MIR places for Family and Community Care in the Region, only 9 will be attached to the Rafael Méndez de Lorca hospital, although, according to the call, the MIRs will be formed in the Águilas Primary Care devices.

Martín said that this offer is 30% below the needs of family doctors in the Region, one of the specialties most affected by the lack of professionals.

Martín warned that "MIR is lacking and there are many medical schools."

In this regard said that the desire of the regional government to promote a private university linked to an ultra Catholic organization in reference to the UCAM is producing a saturation of graduates in medicine that later will not be able to obtain a place of MIR, which will prevent them from specializing and be able to exercise their profession.

Only one UME in all of Lorca

The consequence of a management that Martín described as "disastrous" is the deficit of facultative personnel in the public health centers of Area III of Health, to which must be added the lack of material means, especially those related to emergency care.

In this sense, Martin denounced that Lorca only has a Medical Emergency Unit (EMU), which does not meet the needs of the population, as evidenced by the fact that last week a neighbor who suffered a cardiac arrest in the Civic Center of neighborhood of Alfonso X El Sabio had to be revived for more than 30 minutes by a civil guard because the UME was not available to assist him immediately.

Therefore, Martin demanded that Lorca have, at least, another Medical Emergency Unit, "because what is at stake is the lives of our neighbors."
