The Palace of Guevara recovers today from its rooms the historic pharmacy Room thanks to the joint work of the councils of Culture and Local Development (13/02/2019)

The Mayor of Lorca, Fulgencio Gil, opens this afternoon at 7:30 p.m. the rehabilitation of the Pharmacy of José Sala Just, which was located at number 2 Alamo Street, whose particular furniture and period furnishings was donated by the family to the municipality in 1994, being installed that same year for its conservation and exhibition on the ground floor of the Palacio Guevara de Lorca.

The pharmacy, after its dismantling, cataloging and installation in the Guevara Palace, will become a well-appreciated and widely visited for its ethnological, artistic, scientific and emotional values.

But after the earthquakes of May 11, 2011, the Palacio Guevara building was significantly damaged, just as it would happen to the personal property it housed, including the Sala Pharmacy itself, damaged both in formal integrity and in its content.

What will force its disassembly and storage for later recovery.

The vicissitudes suffered by this pharmacy, especially affected the old wooden carpentry structure, which was already in poor condition by dampness and xylophages, so it is decided in its last disassembly to keep the carvings, doors, columns , original stained glass and furniture, discarding the internal structure in poor condition.

The total value of the restoration amounts to € 72,500.

In order to recover the original state of this pharmacy and relocate it with dignity and historical rigor in the basement of the Guevara Palace, the new structural elements have been planned, with the premise of facilitating a future orderly dismantling.

For what has made a previous installation and adjustment of all the elements of wood in the Carpentry Workshop of the Department of Local Development.

It was subsequently dismantled and finally placed in the Guevara Palace, including the most characteristic elements of this office and pharmacy laboratory, mainly those that configured the pharmacy built in pine and oak, richly decorated with carvings and ornamentation in neo-Gothic style. , work dating from the late nineteenth century and made by the Lorca carver Juan Campos Sáez.

The responsibility for these actions has fallen to the Department of Local Development and Culture.

For what has been counted on the participation of the Carpentry Workshop teams, the Specialization Workshop in the field of the restoration of wooden elements, the Workshop of auxiliary operations of assembly and electrotechnical installations and of the Painting Finishing Workshop in work, all dependent on the Local Development Council, carrying out this work under the supervision of the commissioner for the musealization of the Palacio de Guevara, Manuel Muñoz Clares.

The main actions carried out were: the construction of a wooden load-bearing structure with the original dimensions of the pharmacy, the manufacture of the internal structure of the attached furniture, the restoration and replacement of moldings and missing structural elements, adjustment of elements of original carpentry, recomposition and treatment to anti-xylophages of all elements of wood, cleaning, consolidation and restoration of all original parts, assembly and initial adjustment in the Workshop of Carpentry of the Department of Local Development, ordered and documented disassembly of all the wooden elements of the pharmacy, installation of the supporting framework, the structure of the furniture and ornamental elements in the Guevara Palace, chromatic recovery treatment, following the criteria of restoration of the historical heritage, seeking a homogeneous reading of the set but differentiated the elements originals of what

s new, installation of marble shelves, glass and lighting, cleaning and restoration of all the botamen and appliances of the pharmacy, installation of anti-seismic protection systems and painting the walls of the hall.
