The Mercedarias close their jubilee year with an urban intervention and open day (15/02/2019)

The Order of Mercy, which has a convent and college in Lorca in the historic center of the city, has celebrated its jubilee year throughout 2018, which was intended to commemorate the 800 years since the founding of the Order by San Pedro Nolasco .

The anniversary began on January 17, 2018 in San Pedro del Vaticano, Rome, concluding on January 17, 2019 in Lima, Peru.

During this period there have been numerous acts in different countries of South America and Europe, highlighting the two audiences with Pope Francis.

Within the activities celebrated by the Order in Spain has been notorious the battery of actions developed by the Mercedarian schools throughout the national geography, and especially the Madre de Dios School MM.

In the City of the Sun the acts began on February 17, 2018 with the inauguration of the building "Merced: roots and future" by the Bishop Don José Manuel Lorca Planes;

nestled in the heart of the old town, on Zapatería Street, it has a multipurpose pavilion and several multipurpose rooms.

In addition, through the glass floor of the exhibition hall can be seen historical remains that are part of the legacy of the Order of Mercy in Lorca.

There is planned the location of the future Museum of Sacred Art, which will feature some of the most important pieces that the religious have, including the sculptural group of San Blas, Francisco Salzillo.

During the month of April, the School "Our Lady of Mercy" of Tres Cantos, Madrid, hosted a musical recital with the contribution of about 200 boys and girls from all Mercedarian schools in Spain, in which the Lorca students participated successfully

At the end of the same month, a gathering of religious and lay Mercedarians took place in Barcelona, ​​with the participation of Lorca.

The traditional Week of the Family, in the month of May, led to the celebration of numerous activities among which the creation of a large mosaic with the shape of an olive tree and the shield of the Order, in allusion to the dream by which San Pedro Nolasco stood out. He founded the Order of Mercy.

In its confection in the Plaza de España, almost 800 school students participated.

With the arrival of the end of the course, between June 30 and July 5, a pilgrimage was made starting in Toulouse, France, visiting Mas-Saintes-Puelles, birthplace of the founder of the Order: San Pedro Nolasco.

On the pilgrimage, which was called "In the footsteps of Nolasco", both professors and religious took part in the different Mercedarian schools in Spain, passing through Carcassonne and concluding with a Eucharist in the basilica of Our Lady of Mercy in Barcelona.

Lorca hosted the Mercedarian Olympics from October 11 to 14, in which students from the Mercedarian schools of Lorca, Galicia and Madrid gathered, performing various sports activities in the Torrecilla, the San Antonio pavilion and the municipal swimming pool of the Felipe VI Complex, fostering a fertile coexistence among young people through sports and physical activity.

As for an activity so deeply rooted in the local area as the sale of rolls and relics for the day of San Blas, this year and on the occasion of the anniversary, was held in the new building "Merced: roots and future", uniting thus past and future of the presence of the Order in Lorca.

To close a special and relevant year for the Community and the School itself, a series of activities that will take place during the last weekend of February have been programmed.

Thus, on Friday 22nd in the morning an urban intervention will be carried out in the Corredera street, it is an ephemeral artistic action that occupies and transforms a part of the city, as it was already done for the V centenary of the Convent of Lorca and the first centenary of the School, decorating the pedestrian street with more than 8,000 paper boats made by students and their families.

On the same day, in the afternoon there will be a Thanksgiving Eucharist at the College at 7:00 p.m.

For the morning of Saturday, February 23, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., there are many activities planned for the school and the new building.

Activities for children and young people of all ages, from two and three years old to young people of ESO.

The Mercedarians want, on this occasion, to open the doors of their house to thank the citizens of Lorca for their support and constant participation over the centuries to keep alive the legacy of its founder.

The activities will be open to all Lorca society, the goal is for students and families to invite friends to their school who do not know and can spend a very entertaining morning.

Among other things, a circuit of activities for the youngest is planned, a workshop for songs in English, one for robotics and another for the Suzuki method, a teaching-learning method for violin.

For older students there will be a Zumba workshop, a robotics workshop and a storyteller in English.

The older ones can enjoy a workshop with musical activities and the fun game of "bubble balls" in which the boys and girls are introduced into large bubbles and try to move.

María Teresa Lazareno will also hold a dance exhibition with students and students of the Center.

Meanwhile, parents who wish may visit the school facilities and the archaeological remains preserved in the exhibition hall of the new Merced building: roots and future.
