The PSOE works to solve the depopulation of the high districts of Lorca: "Guaranteeing water is essential to fix population" (25/02/2019)

The PSOE presents a motion to the Plenary to request the Mancomunidad de Canales del Taibilla to make possible the connection of its distribution network with the network of the Community of Regantes Campo Alto de Lorca.

"We can not give up the search for as many formulas as possible to solve the water deficit that our irrigators suffer".

The councilor of the PSOE, Antonio Navarro has announced that, at the next plenary session, the Municipal Socialist Group will defend a motion with which they propose to request the Commonwealth of Taibilla Channels to undertake as many administrative and material actions as necessary, "so that the Community de Regantes Campo Alto de Lorca can connect to its distribution network ".

"Water is essential to generate opportunities, to fix population, so we can not give up the search for so many formulas are possible to solve the water deficit that our irrigators suffer," said the mayor.

Navarro has insisted that not only the belt of the garden of Lorca bases its economy in the agri-food sector.

"Lorca's high farms base their economy on agriculture and livestock, and although rainfed agriculture brings together most of the area devoted to cultivation, we can not ignore the hectares of crops that require water supply for their development."

The socialist mayor recalls that the Community of Regantes Campo Alto has an allocation of 730 m3 / ha.

to supply the 435 hectares of irrigated land they have.

However, "the high salinity of some wells that supply these districts reduces this figure to about 300 m3 / ha.".

Some resources that, in addition, "are diminished by the contribution from the Community of Regantes Campo Alto is dedicated to the supply of livestock farms in the districts of La Paca, Zarcilla de Ramos, Las Terreras and part of Doña Inés, among others , and that is indispensable for the subsistence of these cattle exploitations ".

This circumstance, he indicates, "makes that if the initial figure was insufficient, the resulting figure is absolutely unsustainable and incapable of supplying water resources the hectares of irrigated land existing in the high districts of Lorca".

"In this way, and if the administration continues doing nothing to avoid it, it is putting at risk the maintenance of this type of agriculture and the jobs it generates."

The total water need estimated by the Community of Regantes Campo Alto to ensure the supply of all the irrigated hectares and the totality of existing cattle farms in the high districts of Lorca is 1 hm3.

For this reason, the PSOE already proposed a motion, last November, requesting this contribution of water "for the subsistence of these families and thus curb the galloping depopulation suffered by the highlands."

But evidently, the mayor stressed, "not only the contribution of water resources is necessary, but also, tools must be enabled for their distribution".

Therefore, from the PSOE, understand that one of the "most reasonable" formulas would be through the connection of the network of Mancomunidad de Canales del Taibilla with the irrigated network of Comunidad de Regantes Campo Alto, without renouncing in any case to any other initiative that comes to alleviate the water deficit of our region.

"It is a realistic, feasible and sustainable initiative", with which we continue working to solve the lack of water that affects our municipal area, and in this case, our highlands. "" Hopefully the rest of the parties they have not yet adhered to this motion, show their support for this proposal that we propose, for the good of our neighbors and for the survival of our rural areas.
