Ecologists in Action denounces a plowing and irrigation in Lorca (28/02/2019)

Ecologists in Action has approached the competent authorities to denounce the clearing and transformation to new irrigation without authorization, of 30 hectares of land, part rainfed crops and part uncultivated forest land, in the place known as Los Manchones, Lorca.

Likewise, the construction of a large irrigation raft of 10,000 cubic meters of capacity is denounced.

The organization warns that the transformation to new regadíos without authorizing supposes a serious environmental impact in the region, as much by the unacceptable increase of the hydric demand, that causes overexploitation of aquifers and basins, as by the great transformation that the land undergoes, many times directly affecting natural ecosystems and endangered wild species.

Such is the case of this clearing that affects the protected area LIC ES6200039 Cabezo de la Jara and Rambla de Nogalte, in an area especially sensitive to soil transformation due to the presence of Moravian tortoise, classified as a vulnerable species, and other species of raptors, such as the Eagle Owl or the Culebrera Eagle, steppe species such as the stone curlew and carnivorous mammals such as the badger, species that use the area as a nesting, hunting and hunting area.

In fact, the environmental organization reminds that the Management Plan of the protected areas of the Natura 2000 Network in this area, as well as the Mora Tortoise Conservation Plan, are pending approval, within which this area is considered a habitat for Very high quality for this protected species.

In its complaint, Ecologists in Action urges the competent administrations to intervene, paralyzing the clearing and putting in irrigation, with the opening of the corresponding sanctioning file.

The organization requests that in addition to the corresponding economic sanction, the replacement of the land to its original state is required, since in these cases it is important to repair the damage caused to natural ecosystems and wild species.
