The "Life Adaptate" Project will be launched as of May with the installation of awnings on Corredera and adjacent streets to reduce the effects of heat waves (06/03/2019)

This experience will be carried out in the months of May, June, July, August, September and part of the month of October during a period of 3 years, until 2021, to try to measure the temperature and quantify the benefits obtained for the population and the commercial area. of these emblematic streets located in the historic center of Lorca

The Councilor for the Environment of the City of Lorca, Satur Martinez, reported this morning that the City Social Council held last Monday unanimously approved the creation of a Citizen Participation Table for the drafting of the Adaptation to Climate Change Plan " Life Adaptate Project ".

Satur Martínez explained that "the" Life Adaptation Project "is a European environmental initiative that seeks to adopt measures to combat climate change at the local level, in our municipality it will be implemented through the implementation of a pilot action: the installation of awnings in the historical center with the aim of reducing the effects of heat waves and urban heat islands, for which shadow corridors will be created by installing awnings in several commercial areas and a large pedestrian traffic in the historic center of Lorca, they are Corredera street, Pío XII, Alporchones and Almirante Aguilar street ".

The Councilor for the Environment has indicated that "this pilot project aims to reduce the risks related to the climate in the daily life of the neighbors by decreasing the ambient temperature in the area, making the city more pleasant for pedestrians. It will take place in the months of May, June, July, August, September and part of the month of October for a period of 3 years, until 2021, to try to measure the temperature and quantify the benefits obtained for the population and the commercial area of ​​these streets emblematic located in the heart of Lorca ".

Martinez added that "once the trial period is over, it will be possible to determine if the installation of the awnings in Corredera Street and adjacent streets, can become a measure of adaptation to climate change that the municipality can adopt, to be able in this case , extend it to more routes of our town center, the project will last 4 years (September 2017 / September 2021) ".

The objectives of the "Life Adaptation Project" are to reduce the temperature and therefore the thermal sensation of the pedestrians;

reduce the temperature of the facades and the pavement created by the "microclimates" in the cities;

combating urban heat waves for the benefit of climate change;

to reactivate the commerce of the zone in the months of high temperatures before the demand of the retailers;

decrease the expenditure on refrigeration of homes and businesses in the area and with them CO2 emissions and adaptation by municipalities to climate change and the rise in temperatures expected for years to come.
