The mountain mules praised by NATO come from a livestock hut of Lorca (07/03/2019)

The North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) has recognized the work of the mules in the Mountain Infantry Brigade of the German army.

These animals, born in a cattle hut of La Hoya, in Lorca, have been accompanying the soldiers of said Brigade for a decade.

The Minister of Water, Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries, Miguel Angel del Amor, visited today the livestock farm of mules that supplied several horses to this Brigade, where he stressed that "the strength, resistance and docility of these animals makes them suitable for transporting heavy loads and supplies to difficult places for human access ".

The mules are characterized by having a low height, so they are easy to load and unload, and suitable for these jobs.

The Integrated Center of Training and Agricultural Experiences (CIFEA) of Lorca acted as an intermediary for the sale of the mules between the livestock cabins and the German army, which acquired a dozen of these animals.

The mule, which emerged from the crossing of a mare with an ass, was very used for agricultural work, but its population was declining with the emergence of the tractor as an agricultural tool.

Currently, in the Region of Murcia there are registered a total of 397 specimens, of which 261 are females and 136 are males.
