IU-Lorca defends the interests of local agricultural producers against the agreements of Spain and the EU with third countries (05/04/2019)

The national Deputy of this formation, Ricardo Sixto, will meet next Wednesday with Guadalentín farmers and the Almanzora region to transfer parliamentary initiatives aimed at defending farmers in the region against the agreements signed with South Africa and Morocco

The councilor and Campaign Leader of Izquierda Unida-Verdes Lorca for the municipal elections of May 26, Gloria Martin, announced that the national Deputy, Ricardo Sixto, will meet next Wednesday with Guadalentín farmers and the Almanzora region, to those who will move a parliamentary initiative aimed at defending the rights of local producers against the agreements between the European Union and South Africa, which threaten to "sentence death" to the citrus sector of our country.

The meeting, which will be held in Lorca (6:00 pm, IES Ramón Arcas Mecca), will also be attended by the candidate for the Mayor of Lorca by this formation, Pedro Sosa, and José Luis Álvarez Castellanos, candidate for the presidency of the Autonomous Community for ' Change the Region ', the electoral coalition formed by IU-Greens and Anticapitalists of the Region of Murcia.

Martín assured that this commercial agreement has resulted in a "disastrous" campaign for the farmers of our Community, since a large part of the production has been left uncollected due to the saturation of the markets by the citrus fruits of South Africa.

In this regard, he recalled that only in the Region of Murcia would be affected the production encompassed by 38,000 hectares.

Therefore, IU advocates to review this commercial agreement and apply the safeguard clause established in article 34, which could reverse some of the concessions.

In this regard she said she was "surprised" because the Government of Spain considers that not enough time has elapsed to assess the consequences of the agreement and that we still have to wait to see the evolution of trade relations in this scenario.

"How long do we have to wait? How many more losses should we have?" Asked Martín.

Martin also referred to other similar agreements, such as those signed with Morocco and that "only benefit the large European multinationals, the large landowners, and Mohamed VI, who remains the largest owner of fertile land in that country."

Agreements that, for the mayor of IU, could not respect international law or the rights of the Saharawi people and their natural resources.

For this reason, he recalled that Izquierda Unida has urged Brussels to negotiate a new trade framework, this time with the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic and not with Morocco, since European justice gives the reason to the Polisario Front and has handed down a sentence for the that annuls the agreement between Brussels and Rabat for extending its advantages to products coming from Western Sahara.
