The PSOE criticizes that the Municipal Fire Plan approved in Plenary one year ago is still unfinished (11/04/2019)

The socialists believe that the PP government team "does not do the homework", because there has been enough time to adapt to current state and regional regulations despite being one of the municipalities with the largest forest area in the Region of Murcia.

Lack of a Municipal Plan Against Fire constitutes a risk for the natural environment and the population of Lorca that resides in these places

The Socialist Municipal Group, through its councilor David Romera, criticized that almost a year after the Plenary Session of the City of Lorca has approved a motion by the PSOE for the drafting and implementation of a Municipal Fire Plan, this " it is half written and the Attorney General of the State had to give a wrench to the City of Lorca "for not having a current municipal plan" despite the risk of having more than 75,800 hectares of forest area (45% of the municipality) and a lot of population dispersed throughout the territory ".

Lorca also has Special Zones of Protection of Birds (ZEPAS) and / or Places of Community Interest (LIC) for their values and environmental singularities, totaling 37,500 hectares: Lomo de Bas-Cabo Cope Regional Park;

Sierras del Gigante, Pericay and Río Luchena;

Sierra del Vulture and Pantano de Puentes;

Sierras del Cambrón and Pedro Ponce;

Sierra de Tercia;

Almenara and Carrasquilla mountain ranges;

Sierra de la Torrecilla;

etc.

Romera has stressed that "the PP government team does not do the duties in protecting the population and the natural heritage against forest fires" and regrets that our City Council "has received a touch of attention and will be persecuted" by the Prosecutor's Office along with 150 other municipalities of six autonomous communities, "because any municipality that has forest area has the obligation to have an Anti-Fire Plan", especially when a very hot and dry summer is expected where the risk of forest fire goes to be very high

Otherwise, it could be the case to incur the possible commission of a crime against the environment or collective security.

The socialist mayor reported that according to data from the Autonomous Community of the Region of Murcia, between 2006 and 2016 there were 113 forest fires in Lorca, of which 15 were generated by lightning, 59 negligence and 20 intentional, burning 315 hectares of forest land, mostly woody woody surface.

In recent years, fires of great magnitude have taken place.

The most outstanding was the fire of the Sierra del Almirez (Zarcilla de Ramos) in August 2015, which lasted ten days and burned 230 hectares of mature Mediterranean forest (Aleppo pine) and scrub, causing great social alarm among the residents of the area and serious environmental damage.

Likewise, in the Sierra de Almenara there have been several major fires such as the one in 2004, which destroyed more than 260 hectares of Mediterranean forest and calcined 2,500 specimens of black turtle, a protected species, in four biological reserves;

fires that, of smaller dimensions, were repeated in the summers of 2014 and 2016. Closer to the city, there have also been some fires in the Sierra del Caño, in the Murviedro area and on the northern slope of the Castillo de Lorca

For all this, David Romera has insisted on the need to provide Lorca with a Municipal Plan of Prevention and Emergencies against Forest Fires as it was approved in the ordinary plenary session last June at the proposal of the PSOE, since it is considered very necessary for "safeguard in the most convenient way the protection of the local population, material goods and our natural heritage", while "other preventive actions must be implemented" such as the reinforcement of the cleaning and maintenance of the forests of the municipality, the care of the firebreaks, that the vigilance works are extreme and a campaign of information and environmental awareness is carried out to the population on the risk of fire.
