Marco Antonio's group with a new mantle, car and slaves, and Julio César's cloths, main releases of the Paso Azul for Holy Week in 2019 (16/04/2019)

They have also released a new outfit for Nefertari and an Egyptian slave costume |

The cloister of the Blue Museum of Holy Week has hosted the presentation of the great blue premieres for this year 2019. Among them stand out the new mantle for the character of Marco Antonio, the cloths of the car of Julio César that will be released on Holy Thursday and the layers for the Roman escort of the Christ Recumbent on Good Friday.

Some works that are already part of the rich blue heritage thanks to the work of some thirty embroiderers and more than 5,000 hours of work.

In the mantle of Marco Antonio, embroidered in red and gold velvet, highlights a large central medallion in which we can see Antony and Cleopatra on the terrace of a palace in Alexandria watching the fleet of ships that would face the fleet Roman of Octavio.

In the lower part there is a scene of that naval battle, that of Actium and, as a final culmination, a traditional fretwork embroidered in gold, ornamentation composed of dolphins and lotus flowers -typical of Egypt-.

In addition, a medallion with the image of Neptune, God of the Sea, an allegory to the naval character of the battle, is also incorporated in the neck of the mantle, of black color.

The character of Marco Antonio dresses tunic, helmet and Roman helmet and parades in his new triga, a Roman style cart drawn by three horses, the only hitch of these characteristics in Lorca, which will also premiere in the procession of Holy Thursday, next to the costumes of eight slaves that will complete the group.

Both the mantle and the car have been designed by the artistic director of the Brotherhood, Miguel García Peñarrubia.

A new cloak, 3.5 meters long by 2.8 meters wide that has been possible thanks to the hands, and time, of 16 magnificent blue embroiderers that with their traditional points tinged with natural silk, since May and with working hours of 11 hours, have managed to create a new work of art that is already part of history and blue heritage.

As for Julius Caesar's chariot, he renews the two cloths that have traditionally dressed the pallium of the Roman consul's triumphal chariot.

The first of the mantos, located at the front, is an allegory celebrating the success of Julius Caesar at the Battle of Gaul and the Italian Civil War.

For this reason, a Victory appears that carries a laurel wreath and maintains the velvet and the green color remembering its antecedent cloth.

Meanwhile, the second cloth represents a Roman Hercules wearing the skin of the Nemean lion, the first of the twelve works he had to overcome and whose legend tells that the beast had a skin so thick that it was impenetrable for weapons.

This cloak, which parades in the back of Julius Caesar's chariot, in red velvet, symbolizes the glory and successes of the Roman general personified in a demigod.

The two works have also corresponded to the design and artistic direction of García Peñarrubia.

Both premieres have been specifically designed for the float and will serve to replace the historic works of Francisco Cayuela: the mantle of green velvet with a triumphal eagle, symbol of the glory of Caesar, and the red velvet with the bust of Apollo, God of arts and letters.

Two cloths in which six embroiderers work from September and November, respectively, in days of eight hours of embroidery to enhancement with gold comb and nuanced silk.

Roman Escort of the Recumbent Christ

In addition, it will be in this case on Good Friday, when the three layers of black velvet and embroidered in silver, made in the embroidery workshop of the Paso Azul for the Roman escort of the Cristo Yacente, are released.

In each of the layers a central medallion is incorporated in which you can see the same images that reflect the mortuary cloths that fall down the sides of the throne of the Christ, that is, a medallion with a skull with a royal crown, another with a skull that carries a papal crown and a third with the Cross of Jerusalem, emblem of the recumbent Christ.

In another order of things, the new attire of Nefertari that was premiered in the procession of Palm Sunday and that enriches the spectacular Egyptian procession launched by the Blue Step in an original and true to history.

In the same way, an Egyptian slave costume has been presented that has been elaborated in the workshop of the Association, formed by volunteers who practically embroider during the whole year in the sacristy of the church of San Francisco to enrich the procession.

The presentation was headed by the president of the Brotherhood, José María Miñarro;

the Waitress of the Virgen de los Dolores, Joaquina Gil;

the president of the Paso Azul Foundation, María del Sagrado Corazón García and the Councilor for Culture of the City of Lorca, Agustín Llamas.
