15 focus groups of elderly people from all districts participate in the "Friendly Cities" project (30/04/2019)

A total of 15 focus groups were established taking into account the distribution of the city in 39 districts.

For this they were distributed according to their north, south and central location.

The Hall of Acts of the University Campus of Lorca has hosted this morning the presentation of the diagnosis made for the project "Friendly Cities."

The basic objective of the qualitative study that has been developed is to know the aspects of the municipality that are "friendly with the elderly", highlight the possibilities of development and propose new measures.

The results indicate that the group of older people transfers a high level of satisfaction with their life in general, which is slightly higher in districts (7.7) than in the urban area (7.6).

They show grades higher than 7 the feeling of belonging to the community and happiness with the area in which they live.

As for the specific areas, those that obtain better qualification are those of social fabric, which are around 8, and housing (6.5), while improvements in transportation are demanded (4.3).

Lorca friendly city is an initiative, launched by the Chair Poncemar in collaboration with the City of Lorca and Matia Institute, which aims to promote citizen participation and the public, private and social sectors to promote living environments facilitators for the people who get old.

The research technique used is the so-called focal groups, designed to press the opinion of citizens, in this particular case of the group of older people in the municipality.

The focus group technique is a space of opinion to capture the feelings, thoughts and lives of individuals, provoking self-explanations to obtain qualitative information.

The fact of working in a group facilitates the discussion and activates the participants to comment and comment on different topics which allows generating a great wealth of testimonies.

The groups formed were formed through the citizen participation groups established in which the associative fabric of Lorca is represented.

A total of 15 focus groups were established taking into account the distribution of the city in 39 districts.

For the profile of the attendees were taken into account variables such as older people, different generations and sexes, caregivers of people in situations of dependency, suppliers of proximity services, traders, in addition to operating oenegés in the municipality.

In such a way that the following groups were carried out in Pedanías:

1. La Hoya (women and men 60-74)

2. High districts (women and men 60-74)

3. Campillo (caregivers)

4. Purias / La Escucha (women and men 60-74)

5. Morata, Campo López, Ramonete (solos over 70)

6. Almendricos, la Campana (women over 75)

7. Tiata, Tercia, Marchena, Cazalla (men over 75)

And the following in the Center:

8. San Cristobal, Los Angeles, San Diego (solos over 75)

9. Casco Antiguo (women over 75)

10. La Viña, San José (men and women 60-74)

11. High neighborhoods (women and men 60-74)

12. Center (men over 75)

13. Service area downtown

14. Providers services area neighborhoods bordering

15. Providers services area districts.

The groups worked between March 7 and December 26, 2018, and a total of 146 people participated.

In order to obtain a greater knowledge of the degree of friendliness and open the process of participation in the diagnosis to the opinion of a greater number of citizens of all ages, a friendliness questionnaire was carried out.

Its objective is to know the degree of friendliness of the municipality through quantitative indicators.

In total, 858 questionnaires were collected and distributed by sex in 566 women and 290 men (2 NS / NC);

and by age in 622 people under 65 years and 212 people who have exceeded 65 years.

Which means that the sample is made up of 66% of women, 33.8% of men and 74.6% of minors between 15 and 64 years old and 25.4% of people of 65 and over.

Of the total of questionnaires collected, 529 belong to people living in the urban area of ​​Lorca (61.7%) and 325 to the districts (38.1%).

For the start-up and development of the initiative, a Promoter Group was set up, composed mainly of seniors who accompany the entire project process and endow it with continuity and strength.

This GP works as an empowering tool for the participants, placing them as active citizens for the improvement of the city's welfare.

Its objectives are to disseminate the project, promote involvement, generate a working group, advise on the design of the action plan, work on the development of the implementation of actions and evaluate the process and results.

For the start-up and consolidation of this GP, a first meeting was held in which the different organizations and associations of older people working in the city were summoned.

From that first meeting, the interested persons were contacted to be part of the Promoter Group
