The PSOE asks for intelligent acoustic signals at traffic lights to improve accessibility for the blind (03/05/2019)

The socialists denounce that in recent years at many traffic lights in the city have been uninstalled acoustic warnings, so for blind and visually impaired people it is very problematic to cross the street every day, subtracting autonomy.

They demand for Lorca to implant an intelligent system in which the users make activate through a command the acoustic signals of the traffic lights.

The Municipal Socialist Group in the City of Lorca, through its councilor David Romera, has asked that smart acoustic signals be implanted in the city "to solve the difficulties for the accessibility of blind and visually impaired people and to cross the street every day does not become a risk. "

Currently, the number of members of the ONCE in Lorca exceeds 200 people, a figure that increases to more than 300, with some municipalities in its area of influence and who come to the city to buy or make arrangements.

Romera has pointed out that in recent years, acoustic warnings have been eliminated from many traffic lights, so the green cycles of traffic lights for pedestrians, "go completely unnoticed by blind or visually impaired people, which it constitutes a risk, a danger, because they only detect the moment of passage when they hear that the vehicles stop or when they are served by other citizens, so they have no autonomy at the time of crossing the street ".

Romera gave the example of the crossing of the Plaza de la Estrella in the neighborhood of San Cristóbal, one of the busiest in Lorca, whose traffic lights have been eliminated acoustic warnings, which were installed since the lights were set.

At present, "there is a total lack of planning in the distribution of acoustic warnings at traffic lights in the city", as users complain "about the elimination, without explanations, of many warnings already installed years ago; the installation of new advertisers is requested in areas where there is demand for it and it is ignored, they are installed arbitrarily in streets where they have not been requested, or even have been installed traffic lights of important and well-traveled avenues as in the Cervantes, which is an added problem. "

In this regard, the socialist mayor regrets "that the PP government team has not been interested or have taken advantage of urban regeneration projects to adapt the traffic lights to the needs of the blind or visually impaired."

Romera has indicated that "unfortunately, a good part of Lorca's traffic signals lack acoustic warnings, including busy areas near shopping centers, educational areas, administrative or health centers" so the accessibility of these people "is very limited in good part of the city, which makes them less independent to move from one place to another with all the guarantees. "

Finally, David Romera has highlighted the need to provide a feasible solution to this problem, by launching a system of intelligent acoustic warnings that, through the bluetooth system, allows users to have a personal remote control that they put in motion when approaching a traffic light and a special acoustic signal is activated in the green phase of the pedestrian traffic light.

It is a Smart City application that puts technology at the service of users, who can move more safely through the city, while preventing traditional acoustic alarms from causing discomfort among the neighborhood, especially at night. , being always sounding.

With this system, the signal will only sound when activated by the blind and the city becomes more integrated. This system has already been implemented with great success in many Spanish cities in collaboration with the ONCE: Madrid, Barcelona, Seville, Murcia, Salamanca, Las Palmas, Reus, etc., so it is perfectly extrapolated to Lorca, starting in the busiest and most risky steps.
