Izquierda Unida advocates a change in the productive model that takes Lorca out of precariousness and temporary work (06/05/2019)

The candidate for mayor of Lorca for this training, Pedro Sosa, is committed to a radical change in the productive structure of the municipality, with new branches that provide greater added value, increased R & D expenditure, more training effort and capacity to attract investments and retain talent.

"We have a privileged enclave as a gateway to Andalusia, so we must strive to generate synergies with the regions of eastern Almeria that compensate for the pull of the Murcia-Cartagena axis that is leaving Lorca isolated," he said.

Pedro Sosa, candidate for mayor of Lorca, and Gloria Martin, number two of the candidacy of Izquierda Unida-Verdes for the municipal elections of May 26, have held a working meeting with Angel Torregrosa, delegate of CC.OO.

in the Guadalentín;

with Conchi Sánchez, general secretary of UGT in Lorca;

and with other union representatives.

Sosa has explained that the drama of unemployment, relativized in recent years by the increase in temporary contracts of short duration and low remuneration, continues to be present in the Lorca society, and is largely attributable to the closure of many companies and the lack of replenishment of business fabric.

IU-Greens has warned on countless occasions in the progressive loss of Lorca business fabric, where the textile has been practically extinct, while tanning has great difficulties and has lost a significant number of workers over the past decades.

It has also closed the cement plant and more recently Coopbox in the Saprelorca industrial estate, without any movement for the implementation of other industries or factories, except for the construction of the new slaughterhouse of the company La Comarca.

All this makes the reactivation urgent

The candidate for mayor of Lorca also noted the weakness of small business and trade, which also contributes negatively in the generation of jobs.

At the same time, many employed workers subsist on temporary, part-time contracts and with increasingly lower salaries, to which must be added the increase in families where none of their members have a job.

Sosa regretted that Murcia is the autonomous community that grew the least in 2018. Only 1.5% of GDP increase, at the same level of Ceuta and Melilla and more than one point below the national average (2.6%).

In that sense, he stressed that "we can not continue to the tail of national growth and affected by low productivity and the precariousness of the labor market, which affect the average income, make the Region and our municipality" vulnerable "to the economic ups and downs

Therefore, IU-Verdes Lorca is committed to a radical change in the productive structure of the municipality, with new branches that provide greater added value, greater R & D expenditure, more training effort and ability to attract investment and retain talent.

"We have a privileged enclave as a gateway to Andalusia, so we must strive to generate synergies with the regions of eastern Almeria that compensate for the pull of the Murcia-Cartagena axis that is leaving Lorca isolated," said Sosa.

The mayoral candidate of IU-Greens also believes that economic diversification is necessary through the strengthening of the sun as a source of research and job creation.

"We need to know where we want to go, what we want to specialize in, believe in our potential and know how to offer them to leading companies that, in turn, generate auxiliary industry," he concluded.

Latest Employment data

IU-Greens and the trade unions CC.OO.

and UGT have coincided in describing as "worrying" the employment data for the month of April.

Although the impulse of Holy Week has made 6,572 employment contracts in Lorca, these are 598 less than in the same month of 2018. In addition, only 5.37% of these contracts have been undefined, while 94, 63% are temporary in nature.

This shows that precariousness is still a determining factor in the creation of employment in the municipality.

In addition, the contracts made to men (4,454) double those made with women (2,118), which puts the accent on the existing inequality in Lorca at the time of being part of the labor market.

By sectors, agriculture and services are still, by far, the sectors that have generated the most employment (3,826 and 2,492, respectively), compared to construction (130) or industry (124).

Both IU-Greens and the main union forces regret that Lorca remains anchored in an economic model that is not very diversified and generates unstable and precarious jobs that "must be changed".
