The Department of Health recalls the basic tips to protect against high temperatures and avoid heat strokes (25/06/2019)

In addition, they teach how to act in case of suffering the bite of marine animals such as jellyfish or the importance of respecting the signaling flags of the different beaches.

With the arrival of the summer season, the Lorca City Council is launching the deployment of human and material resources necessary for surveillance, rescue and daily rescue services in the coming weekends of June 22, 23, 29 and 30 and of full form from July 1 to September 1, from 11 am to 8 pm.

In order to increase the safety culture in our bathers and visitors, the following tips are made available to prevent any risky situation we may encounter during these summer months.

Taking into account the official recommendations for the summer period of the Ministry of Health, Consumption and Social Welfare, we inform you of some general measures:

To protect yourself from high temperatures, drink water and liquids frequently, even if you do not feel thirsty and regardless of the physical activity you do.

Although anyone can suffer a heat-related problem, pay special attention to babies and small children, seniors and people with diseases that can be aggravated by heat and dehydration, such as heart disease.

You should stay as long as possible in cool, shaded or heated places, and refresh yourself whenever you need it.

Try to reduce physical activity and avoid outdoor sports in the hottest hours (from 12 to 17) and make light meals that help replenish the salts lost by sweating (salads, fruits, vegetables, juices, etc.).

Regarding activities in the aquatic environment, we must bear in mind that adults must constantly monitor children closely, both when they are in the water or when they are playing near it.

The meaning of the flags and the instructions of the lifeguards must be respected.

Do not consume alcohol when you are going to do any type of activity in the water.

You have to know the depth and depth of the water before diving and avoid bathing in areas of currents.

During the summer season, washed away by marine currents, jellyfish populations arrive on the beaches.

Therefore, caution is advised because of the danger

which may involve contact with them, especially with the hydrozoo known as the Portuguese caravel.

If you have been bitten or touched by a jellyfish, you must clean the area affected by the bite, wash, WITHOUT RUBBING the area, always using salt water and NEVER use fresh water, since due to differences in osmotic pressure the remains of cells Urticants that persist could explode and spread more poison.

It is necessary to warn the lifeguards or go to the lifeguard post to be attended.

If there are remains of tentacles attached to the skin, it must be carefully removed using tweezers or a mechanism that resembles a pincer, such as the use of two cards and NEVER touch the area directly with the hands.

To relieve pain, apply cold (no more than 20 minutes) to the affected area using a plastic bag containing ice, avoiding exposing the wound to sunlight and not scratching.

If the pain is very intense or the person's condition progressively worsens, they should notify the rescuer again or go immediately to a medical center.

To alleviate the intense local pain caused by Portuguese caravel bites, there are some studies that recommend treating it by immersion of the affected limb or showering in hot water, at 40 to 45 ° C, for about 20 minutes and applying a topical solution of baking soda. sodium.

When the jellyfish appear in the bathing areas the best precaution is to stay out of the water and warn rescuers deployed in the area.

Finally, remember that the signaling flags are placed in the respective surveillance and rescue posts, indicating the safety conditions of the bathing places through the colors:

- RED: Danger, prohibition of bathing.

- YELLOW: Caution.

- GREEN: Security.

Bathers and visitors are asked to cooperate with citizens respecting the state of the flags, as well as the instructions of the rescuers.

It is reported that the new Ordinance Regulating the Correct Use of the Beaches of the Litoral of the Municipality of Lorca published in the BORM and currently in force, which addresses, among others, a title to the service of surveillance, rescue, has been approved. lifeguard and beach safety, being under sanctioning regime the breach of any of its prohibitions and rules of conduct.
