Four Saharawi children enjoy summer in Lorca thanks to the temporary shelter program "Vacaciones en Paz" (10/07/2019)

The children, who arrived in the city last Thursday, will improve their living conditions during these weeks, thanks to the medical attention and the ophthalmological and auditory reviews provided through their adoptive families.

The Mayor of Lorca, Diego José Mateos, has received this morning in the Hall of Town Councils of the Municipal Council the four Saharawi children who are already enjoying this summer in the city thanks to the "Holidays in Peace" program of the Friends of the People Association Saharan.

Mateos has welcomed them and wished them "a happy stay with their host families and with the friends they already have here, as well as enjoying our city, its beaches and its gastronomy".

At the event, which was also attended by councilors from the rest of the political formations that make up the local Municipal Corporation, the children have been given a backpack with different memories of Lorca.

Before the reception, the councilor of Oenegés of the City of Lorca, María Dolores Chumillas, has announced this morning, together with the president of the Association of Friends of the Saharawi People, Antonio García Ros, the details of a new edition of the program of temporary reception of Saharawi minors.

The mayor explained that "last Thursday four Sahrawi children arrived in Lorca who are already enjoying their families in Lorca.The minors, aged between 8 and 13 years, come from the refugee camps of Tindouf, in Algeria, and will be with us until September 4. "

Chumillas Martinez stressed that "on occasion has provided a budget for the purchase of drugs to move them to the area where the children live, something that is intended to recover with some of the projects focused on the Saharawi people."

And he added that "they intend to reuse the prefabricated houses of the San Fernando neighborhood making them reference medical centers."

The councilor of Oenegés has reiterated that "among the preferred things that are always included in the caravan, in addition to non-perishable foods, are medicines for childhood and antidiarrheal colds, as well as what is necessary to combat diabetes."

For his part, the president of the Association Friends of the Saharawi People, Antonio García Ros, said that "the objective of this program is for children to improve their living conditions, for this during these weeks the children receive medical care and ophthalmological reviews. and auditory ".

García Ros recalled that in 1996, 40 children from the Tindouf refugee camps arrived in Lorca. "They passed in our city for only one month, but the impact they caused in our homes was such that, in Puente del Pilar, the On October 12, a group of Lorca traveled to the refugee camps and on the way back we created this group, whose first president was Pedro González, and since then we have been providing humanitarian aid through a caravan that we send to that area once a year. "
