IU-Green asks that Lorca be a city free of glyphosate and that the City Council ensure the quality of the air (17/07/2019)

Councilor Gloria Martín asks the City Council to develop ecological and non-toxic proposals in urban environments and public spaces to ensure the quality of the air we breathe and the health of those affected by diseases such as multiple chemical sensitivity.

The councilor of Izquierda Unida Verdes, Gloria Martin, has asked the municipal government team that Lorca becomes the fifth city in the Region of Murcia after Cartagena, Molina de Segura, Santomera and Totana that agrees not to use glyphosate, a herbicide toxic, in the maintenance of their gardens and public spaces.

In this regard, Martin recalled that this phytosanitary has been recognized as a product "potentially carcinogenic" by the International Agency for Research on Cancer, dependent on the World Health Organization.

The mayor of IU-Greens said that the City must bet on more sustainable and less polluting alternatives to chemical herbicides in parks, gardens and public areas, as well as urging the Ministry of Agriculture and the Ministry of Agriculture to prohibit its use in the orchard lorquina.

Martín encouraged public administrations to make use of ecological and non-toxic proposals in urban environments and public spaces.

In this regard, he highlighted that diseases such as multiple chemical sensitivity (SQM) have an increasing incidence among the population.

An illness that is characterized by the loss of tolerance to the presence in the environment of various chemical agents such as household cleaning products, perfumes, solvents, hydrocarbons or phytosanitary products.

Tropospheric ozone

Gloria Martin has also asked the municipal government team for explanations about the fact that on July 11 the anti-pollution framework protocol was not activated in the municipality, despite the fact that the information threshold for the population located was exceeded in 186 micrograms of tropospheric ozone per cubic meter of air.

A fact that reported yesterday the organization Ecologists in Action.

Martín recalled that there is a protocol for informing residents about the prevention measures to be adopted due to the increase in ozone levels that is produced by the increase in temperatures and solar radiation along with pollution.

However, "in Lorca nobody found out".

Law requires authorities to direct messages to citizens to prevent them from taking to the streets in certain circumstances.

A warning that is especially important in vulnerable groups, such as the elderly, the sick, children and athletes.

The mayor of IU-Greens demanded that the local environmental authorities comply with this protocol and that they transfer the information to the population through the media and even through information panels, as occurs in municipalities such as Cartagena.

"In addition to warning, we must also take measures, as in many other European cities," said Martin.

In that sense, IU-Greens called for greater control and limitation of industrial and traffic emissions since "we are talking about a serious health problem".

Martín also requested the installation of a second fixed station for the measurement of air quality in Lorca, with the aim of improving the diagnosis of the local dynamics of ozone behavior in the municipality.

Finally, the councilor of IU-Greens requested changes in the environmental policy that is developed in the City Council, "so that in the end it is not the same as the PP or the PSOE governs".

In line, he regretted that the Environment area remains linked to the Urbanism "as if it were second category", and without establishing sufficient counterweights of power so that the need to protect natural spaces, avoid soil contamination and of the air, or fight against desertification, become "priority objectives".
