IU-Verdes asks to stop an aquaculture estate in front of the beaches of Lorca that "will generate eight tons of waste per year" (11/02/2020)

The councilor of this training, Gloria Martín, warned about a project that will generate serious environmental damage in a protected area in addition to a "brutal" landscape impact.

"Right in front of our best coves we want to put 80 cages of 28.6 meters in diameter each, just two kilometers from the coast, and where eight tons of annual waste will be generated that will go directly to the sea, just so that a company private do business, "he warned

The councilor of the United Left-Greens, Gloria Martín, has announced that her municipal group will raise a motion to the ordinary plenary session in February to try to stop the construction of a polygon of marine crops on a stretch of the Lorca coast.

Martín, already denounced this project in 2018, when the Ministry that then directed the former mayor of Lorca, Francisco Jódar, took out the preparation of the environmental impact study on the construction of a 130-hectare polygon for cage-intensive marine cultivation Floats of 8,000 tons per year of different species, mainly golden and sea bass.

Last Friday, the Ministry of Water, Agriculture, Fisheries and Environment has submitted to public information the project for the construction of the aquaculture estate that now has 297 hectares.

"They have increased their surface more than double, so if it seemed a nonsense before now we believe it is a real environmental attack," said Martin.

"What kind of natural park is one that on land is planted with plastic and in the sea can host an industry that generates eight tons of waste annually in the form of excrement, feed and animal health products just two kilometers from the coast? ", he asked himself.

And it is not surprising to Martin that there are voices that are asking to apply article 155 of the Constitution to withdraw the powers in the environment from López Miras Government.

"They have swept the Mar Menor and now they are going for any natural space where business can be generated for a few," he lamented.

The councilor of IU-Verdes has warned that the project would be located within a Special Conservation Zone (ZEC) of the Natura 2000 Network and within the Levantine-Balearic marine demarcation, established in Law 41/2010, of environmental protection Marine.

It would also affect the Sites of Community Interest (SCI) "Calnegre" and "Submerged Coast Strip", and has warned "of the enormous environmental damage" that would result in the dumping of huge amounts of food debris and excrement, as well as chemical products derived of the use of medicines (antibiotics, biocides, antiparasitics) and substances used for cleaning and maintenance of facilities, such as antifouling paint, highly polluting.

The project does not include the intention of the autonomous community to create a third Marine Reserve of Fishing Interest in the same area where it is now intended to install this marine estate.

The process is in its initial phase, but there is an intention to conserve this space not only to recover the natural population of species, but to generate around it a sustainable and lasting economic activity based on the enjoyment of nature.

"All this will be spoiled if this project is not stopped, which will degrade one of the greatest natural jewels that Lorca has," Martin warned.

In this regard, he noted the obvious damage caused by this activity, which would worsen the quality of the surrounding bathing water.

In that sense, the environmental impact study does not even contemplate the increase in jellyfish that is shown to be associated with this type of installation.

In addition, the mayor of IU-Greens referred to the "brutal" landscape impact of this aquaculture estate.

"Lorca has only eight kilometers of coastline and now it turns out that right in front of our best coves we will have 80 cages of 28.6 meters in diameter each just two kilometers from the coast," said Martin.

"From IU-Greens we are going to oppose with nails and teeth to steal the sea horizon just for a private company to do business," said the mayor.

Martín, who at the time demanded, in vain, the "unity" of the municipalities of Lorca, Águilas and Mazarrón to stop the execution of this project, as well as that their mayors put themselves at the forefront of the claims of neighbors and fishermen, has He said that his municipal group will submit a request to the Government of Spain to prohibit this activity in areas of special protection of marine biodiversity where damage to the marine ecosystem can be caused, including posidonia meadows.

Martín recalled in this regard that the State has competences in the maritime-terrestrial public domain "and we want it to be exercised".

IU-Verdes will also submit allegations the deadline ends on March 13 to which he expects to join the City of Lorca through the motion Martin will defend in plenary.
