United Left brings to the European Parliament the situation of the Highlands of Lorca (14/11/2016)

European MEP Angela Vallina calls on the European Commission to explain how much the amount of Structural and Investment Funds allocated to this region during the period 2014-2020, and what is the political and financial commitment Has the EU executive body in relation to the most unpopulated areas such as the districts of northern Lorca

The Councilor of the United Left Greens Lorca, Gloria Martín, presented this morning an initiative of the European MEP of the European Left group, Angela Vallina, who has addressed a parliamentary question with request for written response to the European Commission, the executive body Of the EU, on different aspects that affect the high districts of Lorca.

Article 130 of the Rules of Procedure of the European Parliament allows MEPs to submit a maximum of five questions per month to the Commission.

For this reason, Martín expressed his gratitude to Ángela Vallina, "for establishing among its priorities the situation of the inhabitants of the towns of northern Lorca, who will have a responsible and committed ally in it."

In the document, Vallina assures that there is a serious process of depopulation of the rural centers of the north of Lorca (Murcia).

In line with the denounced by IU-Verdes Lorca, MEP refers to INE data that warn that the so-called Highlands have lost an average of 11% of its inhabitants only in the last five years.

Among the causes of this traumatic demographic phenomenon affecting, among others, the districts of La Paca, Zarcilla de Ramos, Zarzadilla de Totana, Avilés, Coy, Doña Inés or La Parroquia, along with several places such as El Rincón or Las Terreras, Vallina lists "unemployment, absence of services, poor budget or poor water policy".

Reality, says Vallina, "points to the need for a specific plan to revitalize the Highlands of Lorca that addresses, in a socially, economically and environmentally balanced way, the development of this natural region where it is urgent to create jobs and fix population."

That is why IU MEP, a member of the Committee on Regional Development, asks the European Commission to explain how much European Structural and Investment Funds are allocated for this region during the period 2014-2020, what is the commitment Political and financial situation of the EU's executive branch in relation to the most unpopulated areas such as the Lorca Highlands, and asks whether the compromise is at risk following the signing on 30 May of the so-called Amsterdam Pact An Urban Agenda.

In the latter case, IU expresses its concern that a greater interest in the urban dimension by the European institutions could be detrimental to support for rural areas.

The European Commission has six weeks to respond to these questions.

Gloria Martín recalled that in the full municipal of October the PP government team committed to start work on the drafting and implementation of a plan to revitalize the Highlands by consensus among neighbors, economic and social agents and All political forces represented in the City Hall.

In that sense, she said that the data collected by the MEP will be essential to address the corresponding analyzes and to indicate the investment priorities in this area.
