Lorca and Caravaca will host the twinning acts between the cofradías of the Virgin of the Huertas and the one of the Santísima and Vera Cruz (25/11/2016)

The first of them will take place next December 4 in the Basilica of Caravaca.

It will correspond, at the end of 2017, a meeting in the city of the sun that will ratify the ties of union between both groups.

The Mayor of Lorca, Francisco Jodar, along with the President of the Royal Brotherhood of the Virgin of the Huertas, patroness of the city, Isabel Giménez, has informed that this group is going to twin with the Royal and Illustrious Brotherhood of the Blessed and Vera Cruz, in a ceremony that will take place on December 4 at 12:00 in the Basilica of the True Cross of Caravaca.

This act will be matched with a similar one that is expected to be developed in Lorca with the presence of both Brotherhoods at the end of 2017.

The First Edil has emphasized that both sororities have a very similar profile.

In fact, it is worth noting that they watch over the respective patronage images of their cities, both of which also constitute cities that are enclaves of maximum border importance and crossroads in the Middle Ages.

Francisco Jodar recalled that history tells us that Lorca and Caravaca de la Cruz became cities bordering bastions of Christianity and the reconquest of territories from which began to expand this faith to different populations, mainly enclaves of Andalusia and Castilla la Mancha .

The Mayor explained that through this twinning is marked the goal of promoting the realization of a series of religious and cultural commitments between both brotherhoods, while standing as a symbol of brotherly love and new bond of union between both cities, whose History, society and culture can not be understood without entering into the knowledge of its most sacred symbolic exponents, such as Vera Cruz de Caravaca and the Virgin Mary Royal De las Huertas, Lorca.

The image of the Virgin of the Huertas is attributed, according to the popular tradition, to a gift of the then Prince Alfonso, laterAlfonso X the Wise, that during its participation in the fight with the Arabs in the time of the reconquista the brought From Zamora.

At that height, which he always placed in his royal tent, he begged for help in his military campaigns.

The recovery of the city was attributed to him as much by the prince as by the lorquinos to the Marian intercession.

After leaving, he left the image on Lorca land, proceeding to erect a hermitage.

The image was destroyed during the Civil War, being the present a replica elaborated by the sculptor Jose Sánchez Lozano.

It was canonically crowned as Patroness of Lorca in 1944.

The Caravaca Cross is, according to tradition, a relic of the Cross on which Jesus Christ was crucified and found the Empress St. Helena.

It is conserved in a reliquary in the form of a double-legged patriarchal cross on a vertical one, in the Basilica of the Real Alcázar of the Vera Cruz of Caravaca de la Cruz, and is a religious patrimony of the Royal and Illustrious Brotherhood of the Santísima and Vera Cruz Of Caravaca.
