The Civil Guard removes a mortar grenade found in a waste treatment plant (28/11/2016)

The artifact was located on one of the waste selection tapes by a plant operator

Throwing an explosive device into a waste container can seriously endanger people.

The Civil Guard of the Region of Murcia has removed from the plant of the Waste Treatment Center of Lorca, an instruction grenade for inert mortar.

The device was started when the Civil Guard was alerted to the discovery of an explosive device in one of the waste selection tapes of the Waste Treatment Center of Lorca, located in the Hondo de Lorca.

Expert technicians from the Explosive Deactivation Group (GEDEX) moved to the site where they found that an operator of the plant had located what turned out to be a mortar training grenade.

The checks made on the device made it possible to discard that it was active, lacking a projection cartridge, so that it was not destroyed.

Although this device was inert, others, with identical characteristics, can maintain their active explosive charge so that their manipulation by non-specialized personnel can be dangerous.

Those citizens who are in possession of some type of material of this characteristics must communicate it without delay to the Civil Guard, since throwing it to a container of urban waste can endanger people.

Safety recommendations

In the event of an abandoned object that may be suspected of being an explosive, incendiary or pyrotechnic device, the Civil Guard recommends that the citizens follow the following indications:

Give the real consideration to any object, with the appearance of an explosive device, that is strange to the environment in which it is.

Do not touch or move the object.

Do not dispose of them in municipal waste containers

Call the emergency telephone number: 062, which the Civil Guard has available 24 hours a day, so that they can be neutralized and safely destroyed by specialists in the field.

If possible, stay in the vicinity of the place until the arrival of the Forces and Security Corps.

Otherwise signal the area or provide the coordinates through some GPS location program or application, very common today in some mobile phones.

In other words, DO NOT TOUCH, DO NOT MOVE, SIGNAL and WARN out at 062

Any kind of manipulation could have fatal consequences.

The Civil Guard has resolved cases in which citizens who locate old explosive devices, move them to their homes, as a decorative object, which carries a high risk both for themselves and their families and neighbors, so it is recommended to continue The security protocol previously set forth.
