The renovation of Juan Carlos I de Lorca Avenue will improve accessibility and increase the green zones of the city center. The Minister of Fomento and the mayor of Lorca begin a round of contacts with neighbors, businessmen, merchants, cofradías and (29/11/2016)

The urban renewal of Juan Carlos I de Lorca avenue will promote accessibility by removing architectural barriers, installing a network for collecting and channeling rainwater and increasing the green areas of the main thoroughfare of the city.

The Minister of Development and Infrastructure, Pedro Rivera, and the mayor of Lorca, Francisco Jodar, presented today the basic project to remodel the main artery of Lorca, which also affects other eleven streets and squares adjacent to this main road.

The residents of the city of Lorca "deserved to be acted already in the center of the city and, in particular, in this emblematic road that acts as the backbone of the social life and commercial activity of the city," said Pedro Rivera.

The responsible for Development highlighted that this action has a budget of almost five million euros, financed by the Ministry of Public Works in charge of the loan contracted with the European Investment Bank (EIB) for reconstruction, and will be implemented by the City of Lorca .

Juan Carlos I Avenue will undergo a comprehensive transformation thanks to a project that "will give more prominence to pedestrians and the presence of more trees and green areas, and will take into account accessibility in the center of the city."

Thus, sidewalks and pedestrian areas will be increased to facilitate the movement of all people along this route and different types of pavement will be used to differentiate uses.

The works, which will run for one year, will include the elimination of steps leading to buildings and shops on the avenue, the planting of 516 shrubs and 216 new trees on large portable planters and the creation of a collection and Canalization of storm water.

In addition, pavement, sanitation network, sewerage and other urban services will be improved.

Among the works include the installation of street furniture and underground containers and the renovation of public lighting to improve energy efficiency, which will include extraordinary light supports for the parades that are carried out in this way on the occasion of Lorca's Holy Week and at parties Employers' organizations.

It will also improve the square of the Oval and the intersection with Santa Clara Avenue, where a roundabout will be executed, and the streets Serrallo, Poet Carlos Mellado, Floridablanca, José Espinosa Pomares, Plaza de Colón, Esplanade of the Station, The Alamedas de la Constitución, Menchirón, Ramón y Cajal and his crossing, and that of Journalist López Barnés.

In particular, the Alameda de la Constitución will restore the pavement, remove architectural barriers and increase its vegetation, while in the Plaza de Colón will promote accessibility in public spaces, vegetation, new playgrounds and Highlights the monument to the victims of earthquakes.

Another unique point is the Esplanade of the Station, where the vials and parking areas are ordered, the accessibility is considerably improved and the Steam Machine, which for years has presided over the northern access of Lorca, is incorporated as a monument.

Information to neighbors and merchants

The Ministry of Public Works and the City of Lorca today began a round of contacts to expose the works to neighbors, businessmen, merchants, guilds and federations to collect their suggestions and include them in the final project.

Following the presentation, the councilor Pedro Rivera and the mayor Francisco Jódar have held a meeting with the executive committees of the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Lorca and the Confederation of Business Organizations of Lorca (CECLOR).

These meetings will continue tomorrow with guilds, the San Clemente Federation, the association of people with disabilities, the Youth Council, the Federation of Women's Organizations, merchants and neighbors in general.
