Sustainable child mobility will be key in the plan to adapt new habits in travel by Lorca (01/01/2017)

Lorca is the second municipality in the Region to develop a mobility plan to achieve a sustainable, connected and intelligent city

Sustainable child mobility will be one of the keys to the Sustainable Urban Mobility Plan of Lorca, a document that promotes the Ministry of Development and Infrastructures and which is working with the City.

Its goal is to achieve a city for and for children.

The director general of Planning, Architecture and Housing, Nuria Fuentes, said that Lorca is "a city of some dimensions that make it feasible to carry out the movement on foot." However, today, still 45% The educational centers are carried out in private vehicles ".

An information session was held at the Palacete Ruano in the framework of the preparation of the Plan to analyze mobility from the point of view of the youngest and what habits can be adopted in the day to day to improve the displacements.

This meeting brought together experts from the national level to present their work, methodologies and case studies to introduce children to urban mobility.

The Plan, which is in a very advanced drafting phase, will include measures that promote the relationship of children and cities and school roads as a tool to recover the city.

During the day the program 'The city of the children' of the Plan of Urban Mobility of Huesca was analyzed, a place of characteristics similar to the ones of Lorca, that has allowed the small Huescians and their families to recover the city from the point of view of the kids.

Also the map and casuistics of the children mobility of Lorca, as well as several initiatives of the City of the Sun related to the mobility of the childhood and the road education in schools were exposed.

Educational scene in Lorca

In Lorca they study a total of 18,094 students, of whom almost 80 for example go to centers located in the urban nucleus.

The range of students enrolled in Early Childhood and Primary Education (3-12 years) is the largest, and there are 15 centers.

Two areas of concentration of centers stand out: the area of ​​the Alameda, in the District of Sutullena, and the District of the Viña.

Most go to school accompanied by their parents, grandparents or mothers, mainly the smallest, with ages between 3 and 9 years.

Transportation to school is often done in a private vehicle, which causes congestion in traffic and problems for pedestrians.

On the other hand, in some areas the students go to class on foot accompanied, generating a great pedestrian traffic.

The six institutes of Secondary Education of the urban center and the Integrated Centers of Professional Formation, suppose about 6,500 students and more than 500 professors.

The axis between the Juan Carlos I avenue and the Granada road agglutinates most of the institutes and has accessibility to public transport and, in addition, some teenagers use the bicycle to go to class.

With the development of the Plan, Lorca becomes the second municipality of the Region, after the city of Murcia, to develop a comprehensive mobility plan to improve its environmental indicators and quality of life, and to make Lorca a sustainable city, Connected and intelligent.
