IU-Verdes-Lorca demands to socialize the benefits of the quarries and restore the mountains (16/01/2017)

The Councilor of the United Left Greens, Gloria Martín, has demanded that the agreements made by the City Council with the marble extraction companies and that exploit the public lot in the municipality are made public.

It is a historical demand for this training, which requires a thorough monitoring of this activity and compliance with measures of protection and restoration such as the control of dust in suspension, explosions or reforestation of areas already exploited.

Martín has denounced the "obscurantism" that reigns on this question since the municipal opposition and, above all, the citizens, do not know the amount of material extracted nor the income that perceives the City by the exploitation of the public mount, that "not even Are included in the municipal budget in a specific item ".

The mayor recalled that, at the urging of IU, a municipal control commission was created on this issue, which met once, without the knowledge of the quarry census, the data on quantities extracted, or their impact on employment Or the environment.

For Martin, it is necessary to know the current situation of these farms and demand the full compliance with the Forestry Law.

In addition, IU-Verdes is requesting a feasibility study on the direct exploitation of quarries located in its own forests, which could lead to the creation of a public company for the extraction and processing of marble within a reasonably short period of time.

Meanwhile, this training requires the revision of the operating conditions and the updating of the canon by volume or weight that can be controlled through a municipal weighing scale that serves to officially certify the quantities extracted.

Likewise, Martin advocates that the agreements signed with these companies incorporate clauses of social responsibility by which they contribute to the sponsorship of cultural, sports or social activities in the areas where they develop their activity.

IU-Verdes also calls for an investigation into non-compliance with environmental restoration of the exploited areas and for the timely responsibilities of undertakings.

In short, "it is a question of the City making this activity profitable for the benefit of the Lorca community, and particularly in the towns where the quarries are located," said Martín, who also referred to the "urgent" need to "restore The landscape "and" to recover the vegetation and the native animal life "in those areas already abandoned by the companies of extraction of the marble.
