The Governing Council today approved, on the proposal of the Ministry of Culture and Portavocía, the declaration of Cultural Interest with category of ethnographic place of interest, the Cortijo and Molino del Escarambrujo, located in Lorca.

Also included are the hydraulic engineering elements that facilitate water intake through the Alcalá irrigation ditch, known today as Sutillena, of Arab origin and dating from the 13th century, fundamental pieces for the correct understanding of its activity, its history and the Historical interpretation of the natural environment where it is located.

The Escarambrujo complex is located in the Diputación de Río, in the vicinity of the Sierra de Cambrón.

According to the documentation available, it was already built and in operation in 1786. It brings together the values of outstanding uniqueness, integrity and authenticity required by law to obtain such a declaration, since the water culture in the Region of Murcia is intimately Linked to their way of life and is its characteristic element, especially in the municipality of Lorca, where mills, batanes and other goods led to the arrival of water to the city for food and agricultural exploitation of their land and property.

Among the immovable property belonging to the place of ethnographic interest are, in the first place, the cortijo and the Escarambrujo mill.

In addition, it includes a section of the Alcázar royal aqueduct, the aqueduct of the seventeen arches (one of the most impressive, with a length of 124 meters and preserved intact), the Rambla del Cambrón aqueduct, the Rambla aqueduct Quintilla, the aqueduct Km. 4, and the Escarambrujo aqueduct.

The Escarambrujo includes different goods both movable and immovable, among which stand out its hydraulic mills.

The first of the facilities is the Cubo Mill, the first to be built in 1786 and in which, from the large rafts, the water reached the system of cubes that ensured the milling.

The next one is the Mill of Aceña, called thus because the element that makes turn the whole system of milling is an aceña or vertical wheel.

Finally, it includes the batán building, built in the first third of the nineteenth century and was transformed into housing.
