IU-Verdes Lorca claims extreme measures against the "olive ebola" and the bacterium that attacks citrus fruits (14/03/2017)

The councilor of this training, Gloria Martín, has warned that in Lorca are in danger some 11,155 hectares of almond, 3,700 olive, 1,500 vine and 1,200 citrus, which could disappear by two dangerous pests.

The national deputy of IU, Ricardo Sixto, leads in the Congress the claims of the sector by these threats

The Councilor for the United Left-Greens, Gloria Martín, announced today that her training has registered a battery of questions in the Congress of Deputies to know the measures that the PP government intends to take on the bacterium Citrus greening.

It is the most important, serious and destructive citrus pest in the world - present in more than 50 producing countries, is devastating the citriculture of two great powers such as Brazil and the United States - for which no phytosanitary treatment has yet been found.

Although not dangerous to humans, it destroys the production, appearance and economic value of citrus trees, as well as the taste of the fruit and its juice, which becomes bitter.

Producer associations have already warned of the urgent need to take preventive action, strengthen surveillance and reduce the risk of entry of the devastating bacteria, which could make this type of crops disappear in Lorca and in our autonomous community, where they are expected to produce 871,000 Tons of citrus in the 2016-17 season.

In Lorca are in danger about 1,200 hectares of orange, lemon and mandarin.

Although the disease has not yet developed in Spain, it is necessary for the government to take preventive measures, since "it has detected in the south of the Iberian peninsula the insect that propagates it," said Martin.

Therefore, it is urgent that the Executive implement preventive instruments and establish a monitoring plan to detect the presence of this bacteria, as well as initiate control and eradication wherever it may be.

Martín also alluded to another bacterium, Xylella fastidiosa, whose presence has already been detected in the Balearics and is also "lethal" for citrus crops, as well as for olive, fruit, vine or almond.

In this regard, he recalled that agrarian organizations such as ASAJA have denounced that the entry of the Xylella in Spain in Italy has destroyed millions of trees demonstrates the "EU suicide policy in pest control."

In Lorca could be affected about 11,155 hectares of almond, 3,700 olive, 1,500 vine and 1,200 citrus.

For this reason, Martín called on the municipal government team of the PP to launch a technical conference to inform trade unions and agrarian organizations about both diseases.

For his part, Izquierda Unida parliamentarian Ricardo Sixto is leading Congress in the demands of the sector for these serious threats, and has already demanded that the European Commission be transferred to "the need to tighten control of pests and diseases in Imports of fruits and vegetables ".

Sixto also asked to know what control strategies the Rajoy Executive will develop to avoid the spread of these diseases, as well as what budgetary provisions he intends to allocate in order to deal with possible pests.
