IU-Verdes Lorca denounces the precariousness of work that affects the nursing workers of the Hospital Rafael Mendez (18/04/2017)

The Councilor for this training, Gloria Martín, requires those responsible for Area III Health to end their desidia and take measures to alleviate this situation before accidents or errors of an irreversible nature occur that workers, through Of its union representatives of CCOO, have warned months in an exercise of professionalism and responsibility

To the councilor of the United Left-Greens Lorca, Gloria Martín, has denounced the precarious work that affects the group of workers and nurses of the Emergency Service of the regional hospital Rafael Méndez, for which it has demanded "immediate solutions" Management of this center.

Martín has alluded to the complaints made in this regard by the trade union section of CCOO of Area III of Health in which it is evident "the lack of human and material resources" to be able to attend with normality to the users of the Emergency Service of This hospital.

As an example, Martín explained that there are more doctors than nursing staff, so that usually only one nurse must attend the requirements of both the doctor and the resident, when the recommendation of the World Health Organization is three nurses per doctor .

The lack of nursing staff also prevents completing the shifts since there are not enough staff to cover "not even the scheduled drafts".

"The nurses of the ER are working on a piece," said Martín, who reported that a single professional has to attend the eight patients in the middle care room plus six of the "improvised" treatment room, a former storehouse of bottles Of oxygen, outside the ER, which has been adapted to administer nebulizations and intravenous treatments.

This implies that patients located in that area are not guaranteed their safety against possible allergic reactions to treatment or any complications.

For the mayor of IU-Greens, fourteen patients per nurse in the emergency room is an "unbearable" ratio that contravenes the minimum quality standards of care recommended by a nurse for every four users in this type of special service.

The situation does not improve in the observation room, which has 13 beds that are attended only by two professionals.

In epidemic peaks, almost 50% more "virtual beds" are enabled in the middle of the boxes, Martín explained, "which not only increases the workload but also increases the risk of errors in the administration of treatments."

Regarding this last unit, the councilor of IU-Greens expressed the concern of the staff because the two boxes for patients requiring isolation have no double-door and "negative pressure", necessary to prevent the spread of airborne diseases such as tuberculosis Or meningitis.

The councilor of IU-Greens warned of the serious repercussion of these circumstances on emergency users of Rafael Mendez, who "suffer from overcrowding in the middle care rooms and observation, long waiting to be attended or enter the plants, as well as risk Of being victims of negligence due to the poor state of certain instruments for the diagnosis or the excessive workload of the professionals. In this regard, Martin said that the service workers themselves have denounced that the situations of "saturation" that are occurring "They endanger the safety of the patient".

Both the Area III Managing Director, Catalina Lorenzo, and the Manager of the Murciano Health Service, Francisco Agulló Roca, have been aware for months of these material and structural deficiencies as well as the overload of work that exists in this service , "Without having done anything to improve the situation," Martín said.

For that reason, the mayor of IU-Verdes Lorca demanded "that they put an end to their laziness" and take measures to alleviate this situation by reorganizing the service and improving their conditions or by facilitating the opening of new health establishments that unload this unit "before Of accidents or errors of an irreversible nature "that the workers, through their trade union representatives of CCOO, have warned months in an" exercise of professionalism and responsibility ".
