Through its MEPs, IU asks for funds to finance the rainwater network in the Highlands of Lorca (07/06/2017)

In the last six months, this training has registered in the European Commission two initiatives related to the problems affecting this area: the scarcity of water resources for the agricultural sector and the acute depopulation suffered by the districts

The Councilor of IU-Greens in Lorca, Gloria Martín, today announced that the MEP of her training, Paloma López, has registered in the European Commission an initiative for the Lorca Highlands to have European funds to finance the project Construction of a rainwater catchment and storage network.

Martín recalled that, at present, the districts of northern Lorca do not have sufficient access to water resources to develop economically sustainable traditional and organic crops such as almond, olive, grapevine or thyme.

According to previous studies, the collection of rainwater would increase the water supply by 70,000 m3 / year only in the irrigated area of the Community of Irrigators Campo Alto de Lorca (200,000m3 / year if it is extended to all villages in the area ).

With an investment of approximately 300,000 euros, "agricultural activity would be guaranteed in this part of our territory without increasing pressure on aquifers," Martín said.

An amount considered "perfectly acceptable" by the Public Administrations and linked to the "survival" of the Highlands.

"It is not reasonable to invest in completely pharaonic projects when our rural environment needs support to complete its development and so that its inhabitants can live with the dignity they deserve," he said.

According to the IU-Verdes mayor, the Commission supports the potential of rainwater harvesting for irrigation, especially in arid areas, as well as the possibility of co-financing within the framework of the European Funds for Strategic Investments (FEIE).

In that sense, IU MEP Paloma López has asked the European Union executive body to inform it of "the specific programs and thresholds for cofinancing of this type of infrastructure agreed with the Government of Spain and the regional authorities" Of which IU asks that farmers benefit from the high districts of Lorca.

Martín was deeply grateful for the interest of Paloma López and the other MEP members of IU for taking the voice of these neighbors to Strasbourg.

In that sense, he recalled that in the last six months, his training has registered two initiatives related to the problem affecting this area: the scarcity of water resources for the agricultural sector and the acute depopulation suffered by these districts.
