City Council and Friends of the Saharawi people join forces for 10 Saharawi children to spend the summer in Lorca through the program "Holidays in Peace" (13/06/2017)

The Mayor of Lorca, Fulgencio Gil, together with the President of the Association of Friends of the Saharan People of Lorca, Antonio García Ros, signed the agreement by which the Consistory and this NGO join forces to carry out the summer program for children "Vacations in Peace", which was recovered last year.

Gil stressed that "Lorca is a city of solidarity and once again we will prove this summer through the visit of 10 Saharan children between 8 and 12 years with whom we will share our city. Through this agreement, from the City Council contribute € 6,000 for the purpose of financing the transfers of the small visitors who will visit us from the end of June, and we are also working to establish an additional line of humanitarian aid for refugees in the camps in North Africa.

It should be noted that the Saharawi child population, refugee in the Tindouf camps, suffers from a chronic nutritional deficit, accompanied in many cases by severe anemia levels.

The high summer temperatures, which accentuate this inadequate feeding, also impede the social and recreational development of these minors.

The "Holidays in Peace" program aims to raise awareness of the problems of the Saharawi refugees, as well as to participate in the organization and monitoring of the program during the summer holidays.

Specifically, it offers Lorca families the opportunity to develop an urgent humanitarian action by welcoming children and offering them:

- A comprehensive medical examination, including vaccination, dental, ocular and auditory review of all children.

- The opportunity to avoid more than 50 degrees Celsius of camps during the summer months.

- A balanced diet during the summer months, which helps children to cope with the healthier winter.

- A welcoming and receptive environment to different cultures.

- The opportunity to live in other environments more fortunate than the one known by the Saharawi minor.

- The opportunity to learn and improve Spanish, the first foreign language in the curricula of the Saharawi schools.

- Awareness-raising activities on the problems of the Saharawi people.

It is necessary to remember the relation of the City of the Sun with the Sahara, since it is twinned with the city of Wilaya El Ayoun.

For the last four decades a large part of the Sahrawi population has been established in the Tindouf refugee camps.

Since then, various international organizations have been responsible for their food, such as the World Food Program through the Red Crescent.

The Mayor wanted to "congratulate the Association of Friends of the Sahrawi People for the very important work they do to help these children who benefit so much from their presence during the summer in Lorca. Every year they show their commitment and turn their attention to these needy children. From the Town Hall we will continue to bet on "Holidays in Peace" as a way for Lorca to continue growing as a city of solidarity and opportunities.
