The Department of Health, the Red Cross and the AECC develop a public awareness campaign to avoid heat stroke in the event of very high temperatures (15/06/2017)

This is a joint initiative that is being carried out today, which includes the installation of information desks at the entrance of the weekly market and in Alameda de la Constitución, as well as the distribution of 300 bottles of water and 100 samples of protective cream.

The Councilor for Health and Consumer Affairs at the City of Lorca, María del Carmen Ruiz, visited this morning the information table installed in the Garden of the Wheel, at the entrance of the Weekly Market, on the occasion of the campaign of awareness that the Municipal Consistory Is doing jointly with the Spanish Association Against Cancer (AECC) and Red Cross for the prevention of skin diseases generated by direct exposure to the sun and recommendations to avoid heat stroke.

Mari Carmen Ruiz explained that in addition has installed an information desk in the Alameda de la Constitución, with a timetable from 9:30 to 13:30.

These tables are meant to spread the importance of using sunscreens especially when going to the beach, as well as when working or being on the street in hours of maximum radiation.

In addition, they also aim to make citizens aware of the advice they must follow to prevent heat stroke from high temperatures.

The Edil de Sanidad has informed that for this purpose, 100 samples of sun protection cream donated by the Hefame Foundation of the Interapothek brand, as well as 300 bottles of water, have been distributed among all the Lorca who have come to inform the information desks, As well as explanatory brochures on prevention against skin cancer and the recommendations that citizens should follow in the face of heat stroke.

Ruíz has pointed out that in the Region of Murcia, according to the latest data available from the Murcia Service of Health, each year are diagnosed 160 new cases of melanoma skin cancer and almost 80 percent of them are a consequence of exposure to Ultraviolet light of solar origin.

To prevent the formation of melanomas, it is important to use a high protection factor for the skin, over 20 or more, and lip protectors.

In addition to applying them every two hours, especially in more exposed areas such as ears, nose or lower lip, where the sun's rays directly hit.

On the other hand, health professionals from the Murcian Health Service (SMS) and the Instituto Murciano de Investigación Biomédica de la Región (IMIB) have designed and developed InfoSun, a free mobile application to help prevent the onset of melanoma.

Through this App users can know which sun protection factor is the most appropriate, depending on the color of their skin and their location.

In addition, it is easy to know the exact index of ultraviolet radiation at the time of the consultation.

It should be noted that heat does not affect all people alike, since there are groups more sensitive to the effects of high temperatures.

In this context we find people over 65 years of age and children under 4 years of age, which must be added to people suffering from cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, Alzheimer's, respiratory or mental illness, workers and people exposed to the sun, as well as People on treatment with drugs such as diuretics, beta blockers and antidepressants, or people with obesity.

From the City of Lorca, as measures to prevent heat stroke, especially in the elderly and children, it is advised to avoid direct exposure to the sun during the hottest hours of the day, to accompany our elderly who live alone;

Avoid sunburn by applying sun protection creams;

Avoid physical activity in the central hours of the day, drink water frequently, cover the head with hats or caps;

Avoid hot foods and slow digestion;

Wear sunglasses, do not consume alcohol, increase consumption of fruits and vegetables, as well as wear light clothing and footwear.

On the part of the Red Cross, they are going to divulge advice to avoid heatstroke, especially among groups to which they have direct access, as is the case of the elderly people who have the teleassistance service, who will be warned against the possible Arrival of waves of calluses, reminding them of the advice that must be taken into account during the hottest days of these times of the year.
