IU calls for a third forestry brigade in Lorca and increase the number of forest workers (30/06/2017)

The councilor of this training, Gloria Martín, suggests that it be installed in the Ramonete Local Police headquarters, practically in disuse, and that the City Council generates stable employment to address the cleaning and clearing of forests and ramblas.

It also requests that the demand of the brigadistas of a vehicle of rapid intervention be heeded

The Councilor of the United Left-Greens, Gloria Martín, has demanded the implementation in Lorca of a third land brigade in the coastal area to expand the human and material resources available to prevent and extinguish forest fires.

Martín explained that Lorca, with an extension of 1.676 km ², is the municipality with more forest area of the Region of Murcia.

However, it only has two checkpoints, one located in Zarcilla de Ramos and another based on the hamlet of Campillo, with nine staff each, which was considered "insufficient."

In addition to the infrading of human resources, and unlike what happens in other regions, the brigades based in Lorca do not have vehicles for rapid intervention that have been demanding for years.

Martín lamented that the autonomous government is not aware of the vulnerability of a municipality that has numerous and extensive forest areas such as the Giant-Pericay, Tercia, Almenara, Torrecilla, Giant, Madroño, Pedro Ponce or El Lomo De Bas.

Precisely the latter, and the whole environment of the regional park Cabo Cope-Puntas de Calnegre, is especially unprotected by the distance of more than 40 km that separates it from the Campillo catch.

For this reason, Martin called for the use of the premises of the local police headquarters in Ramonete, practically disused, to start a third forest brigade in the municipality and the hiring of brigadistas and environmental agents.

The councilor of IU-Greens also regretted that the budget of the Emergency Civil Protection Plan for Forest Fires in the Region of Murcia (Infomur) for 2017, of 12 million euros, was reduced by 2.5 million euros compared to 2016. A cut of almost 20% that has "no sense," he said, after a particularly rainy winter.

"If we add to the lack of cleanliness of our forests and ramblas, we have the result of accumulation of fuels that causes forest fires to start and spread even more intensely and violence than usual," Martín explained.

In this sense, the Councilor showed photographs of several points of the promenade of the Ladies, near the town of Lorca, where plastic, glass and utensils are piled next to the weeds, which can cause fires due to the incidence of lightning Solar power plants.

Without going any further, a few days ago a fire broke out on this same promenade, near the neighborhoods of La Viña and Alfonso X, which was fed by accumulated waste.

In the last week have occurred in the municipality two other forest fires in Zarcilla de Ramos and Almendricos.

This is due, in part, to the fact that the hiring of agricultural laborers by the Town Hall is insufficient, since it is limited to an average of fifty workers per year for a period of only three months.

In addition, its role is not limited exclusively to the prevention of forest fires, as would be desirable.

For this reason, Martin asked that the Consistory address the hiring of "forest peons".

The municipality, which has more than 5,200 unemployed, "needs to generate more jobs in this sector to tackle the cleaning and clearing of our forests throughout the year," he said.
