The Mayor of Lorca, Fulgencio Gil, supervised this morning the restoration work of the church of Santa María, an authentic jewel of the Lorca's historical heritage that is the most outstanding example of the so-called Catalan Gothic in the city.

The First Edil has stated that in just a few days, projects underway have been supervised in strategic axes for the development of a new Lorca: Environmental integration and optimization of the waste center (4.3 million), improvement in schools Ros Giner And Ibáñez Martín: 1.75 million), an integral improvement of Alameda de Cervantes (3.2 million), and today we add the recovery works for use and enjoyment of the Lorca of the church of Santa María.

We have all made history in Lorca.

To this day we have our heritage recovered, and we are working so that the investments continue to flow, because the project we have for our new Lorca does not stop.

The temple began to be built in the XV century and was finished in the XVIII with the incorporation of the rococo style cover.

Once restored the church, desecrated by its ruinous state will be reconverted into cultural space.

The works that were approached in this action centered on the scrapping and consolidation of the ruins benefiting a surface of 815 square meters including archaeological catas.

The last intervention that took place in the church goes back to 2010, when 800,000 euros were invested.

This action allowed consolidating the temple and managed not to fall because of the earthquakes that suffered the municipality just a few months later.

The works that have been carried out to date have focused on the consolidation and recovery of the bell tower, one of the most characteristic elements of the temple, whose initial stabilization was carried out by the City Council on dates immediately following the earthquakes of 2011 , Which provided a metal structure outside the tower that prevented its fall and allowed its conservation.

The Mayor explained that the intervention being developed contemplates providing the church, in addition, of flooring, roof and the bell tower itself.

In fact, work is already under way to prepare the placement of the new roof, which will be the most significant change in the temple.

It is an ample structure of wood finished in its upper part by tile, and that will try to resemble the original ceiling, respecting and integrating in the historical and monumental surroundings in which it is located.

Fulgencio Gil has indicated that the intervention in Santa Maria has included the accomplishment of a series of important archaeological tasks, among them the dating of the elements present in its interior and the analysis of a crypt destined to burials, a widespread activity in The Lorca churches of his time.

It should be noted that numerous human skeletal remains have been found dating from the fifteenth century.
