detail of Lorca

The Cejo de los Enamorados in Lorca could be the third "natural monument" of the Region, after the Mount Arabí of Yecla and Las Gredas de Bolnuevo in Mazarrón (28/07/2017)

Adoración Peñas Marín, councilor of the municipal group of IU-Verdes, will defend this morning a motion in the plenary of the City of Lorca with which it aims to provide the appropriate legal status of protection and enhancement of two extraordinarily relevant elements of cultural heritage And natural of the municipality of Lorca: the Cejo de los Enamorados and the geological heritage of the Lorca Basin.

The councilor of IU-V has affirmed that the Cejo de los Enamorados hardly needs presentation in Lorca.

It is a natural place, cultural, historical, literary, geological - and even sentimental - that is configured as a real icon for Lorca.

A treasure that is included in the delimitation of a Site of Community Importance (LIC) and of a SPA (Special Protection Area of the Birds) and that, undoubtedly, is the point of arrival of the best known and most practiced natural trail Of Lorca.

The Cejo de los Enamorados - and its closest environment - is an enclave that gathers all the elements contemplated in the Law for its effective declaration as "Natural Monument".

It would be a matter of accepting this initiative of IU-V, the third natural monument of this nature of the Region of Murcia, behind Monte Arabí de Yecla, or the Gredas de Bolnuevo located in the neighboring town of Mazarrón.

Its declaration as such would give prestige to Lorca and would reinforce the preservation of the innumerable values that treasures this place and its surroundings.

State Law 42/2007, of 13 December, on Natural Heritage and Biodiversity covers, in its classification of protected natural areas, the category of Natural Monuments.

As such they must declare the spaces or elements of nature constituted basically by formations of notorious singularity, rarity or beauty, that deserve to be object of special protection;

Natural monuments, including geological formations, paleontological and mineralogical sites, stratotypes and other elements of gea that are of special interest due to the singularity or importance of their scientific, cultural or landscape values.

If the IU-V motion were approved, it would be forwarded to the Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Environment, and after the corresponding studies and formalities were carried out at that location, the Government Council would be responsible for the declaration - by Decree- Cejo de los Enamorados as a Natural Monument.

PALEONTOLOGICAL PARK AND "GEOPARQUE"

The second of the issues raised by Adoración Peñas in its motion is aimed at the "geological heritage" of the Lorca Basin, which experts call "international cultural georegion" and which is nourished by more than twenty "places of interest Geological, "both didactic and scientific and economic.

It is a heritage of supranational value, non-renewable and on which we have the tremendous responsibility of bequeathing it to future generations.

The councilor of IU-V has stated that although the delimitation and management of this heritage will correspond, as the case may be, to the cultural administration of the Region of Murcia, within it we find places that sound to everyone: Serrata and its bad lands , The Despeñador, the ramblas of the quarries, the Torrecilla, the Strait, Torrealvilla, Seventeen Arches, etc.

Many of these enclaves have sufficient relevance for their declaration as a Paleontological Park in accordance with the Law of Cultural Heritage of the Region of Murcia, and even, advances the mayor of IU-V, advanced steps, for his proposal to UNESCO as "Geopark": A defined area that presents geological features of special relevance, rarity or beauty.

These features must be representative of the geological history of a particular area and the events and processes that formed it.

This initiative intends to implement in Lorca this Cultural Heritage Law, with the creation of a paleontological park in the Basin whose delimitation and management should be determined by the previous work of the experts.
