IU-Verdes Lorca asks that the squares and municipal buildings are points 'WiFi' (08/08/2017)

Gloria Martín requests that the City of Lorca adhere to the call of the so-called European WiFi4EU Program, whereby the European Commission wants to promote WiFi connectivity in public spaces.

This measure would serve to overcome the digital divide and to deepen social equality, while collaborating with tourism development and walking in the construction of an accessible and inclusive city

The councilor of IU-Verdes Lorca, Gloria Martín, has asked the City Council to establish Internet access points in a "free" way through the WiFi service in municipal buildings, including the town hall itself, and in the public squares considered "Strategic".

Martín encouraged the PP municipal government team to establish a broad coverage map of the WiFi Zone, which provides users registered with the service, "public wireless Internet access without a time limit, to be able to sail with full freedom."

The objective of this measure is to "provide a useful service" so that citizens have free access to the internet and can, for example, carry out the municipal procedures that are already available via telematic.

In that sense, he recalled that the municipalities that already offer this service in parks and public places are "innumerable".

Martín also highlighted the possibility that the City of Lorca adheres to the call of the European Program WiFi4EU, whereby the European Commission wants to promote WiFi connectivity in public spaces such as parks, squares, official buildings, libraries, health centers and Offices of attention to the citizen.

The budget originally planned for the WiFi4EU program is 120 million euros between 2017 and 2019, which would go to the installation of WiFi equipment of the latest generation in public life centers.

The WiFi4EU system will be open to public entities such as municipalities, libraries, health centers and others and will provide the material and installation costs of internet access points to extend free WiFi throughout the city.

The projects will be selected on a first come, first served basis and Gloria Martín asked the councilor responsible to design a plan so that Lorca can be a beneficiary of these funds and make free and free access to the internet available to all citizens.

For IU-Verdes de Lorca, this measure would serve to "overcome the digital divide and also deepen social equality, while collaborating with tourism development and walks in the construction of an accessible and inclusive city."

Currently, the absence of free WiFi means that Internet access is limited by the economic capacity of the population, since not everyone can afford the costs of connecting to the network.

For this reason internet access has become a factor of inequality, "if we consider that the current rates of poverty, unemployment and social exclusion make it difficult to connect to the network for economic reasons even if a mobile phone or Any other device for this, "Martín said.
